+1 yMy dad committed suicide almost two months ago now.. So this topic is pretty close to my heart. Everyone is ABSOLUTELY free to do whatever they want to do with their life. Absolutely, I don't disagree with that.
Do you have parents? Or sisters? Brothers maybe? A best friend? Maybe even children? When you end your life you aren't taking away only from yourself, you take away from the people you love and the people who love you. FOR WHAT?
Although I don't personally struggle with depression, I know that is\t is real, I know it is not something you can deal twith on your own, or something that can be set aside. My dad struggled with his depression every day that he lived, and I know it was often questionable to him as to whether another day on this earth would be worth the pain he would certainly suffer. He beat his depression every single day, for many years. I wish that he knew, on his final day, that he could once again beat his depression like he had countless times before. I wish he knew that his death would be a permanent solution to his temporary problems. I wish he knew how valuable his life was and how deeply it would hurt everyone who loved him. I wish he would have known how much I would mourn his absence afterwards and how I will mourn his absence during the times and important milestones that my father should be with me during. He may not have known these things. I hope that if you feel like another day is not worth the pain, that you come to know that even though it may not feel like it, the hurt will pass, just as it has before.
You are VALUABLE and IRREPLACABLE. The pain your absence will bring to your loved ones will NEVER heal and the fact that you chose to leave will make it hurt worse. Suicide is a permanent and irreversible solution to a problem that is so minute and short when looking upon your lifespan. All of the bad things that happen to us will make the good moments that much more delicious.31 Reply- +1 y
Your father was an extremely strong being if he had to beat back his depression for years. I had a similar fate, but I never attempted it because I was too frightened.
but your father would have suffered more because you wanted him to go on like this, beating his depression everyday.

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI think it's because the majority of people who have suicidal tendencies are clinically depressed or unwell. And if they weren't suffering from this disease of the mind, they wouldn't actually want to kill themselves.
I went through a really scary year, i was really depressed, and i had a lot of suicidal thoughts (often intrusive thoughts). I luckily had people around me to help me, i saw a therapist, nutritionist, and started taking certain medicines to help me cope with my anxiety. I am 95% better now, i still have the occasional hiccup, but i realize that often suicide is an impulse act. And that if i can distract myself or focus my emotions on something else, i don't feel the same. It's also something that if done successfully cannot be undone.
So this is just what i personally believe, because of what i went through. Like you said everyone should be free to make those decisions, but a lot of people who decide to kill themselves aren't free. They are battling their own minds, their own demons and they are losing.
My personal motto:
There is no pain that we cannot bare, because if we couldn't bare it, it would kill us outright.20 Reply
+1 yWhether or not suicide is wrong will always depend on the person you're asking. I know a girl whose brother did it and she went into a severe depression afterward, because they were best friends. I believe that 99.99% of people have people in this world who are important to them. Even if sometimes we feel unappreciated, or are dealing with things that seem unbearable, there are good things for each and every one of us in this world.
I've considered it. I've been in terrible pain emotionally, but I have always thought of how much my parents/friends/siblings love me and how they would feel for the rest of their lives if I did that.
All life is precious. Even though sometimes we question our purpose or feel like we can't handle things, I think it means we're focusing on the wrong things. There are always people MUCH less fortunate than you if you're even on this website. Not to diminish your pain, but it's all about what you focus on.
Remember: when you give the world love and kindness, you receive it tenfold.11 Reply- +1 y

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yThree reasons:
A) Because even if no one really cares anymore, the fundament of our western society, is christianity and this religion teaches, that you go to hell, because only God is allowed to determine when a person should die.
B) It is giving up, on the world and on everyone around you. You are a quitter. The truth is you don't have to kill yourself to get away from everything. Just get in your car, plane whatever and just drive away. Usually it is some kind of social trauma that causes this wish.
There is a simple solution to this, remove the social problems in your life. If you can't run away. Go into the woods if you like.
C) Dead people are not really productive and don't pay taxes, so it is not wanted by the state.
Tell you something I had the last weeks a death wish, I tell you what I did. I stopped doing anything for college, prayed to God, played Heartstone, watched videos and basically I took a vacation, while pretending I would go to my normal classes.
The truth is the world we live in right now, expects that humans work with the same speed as the machines we are using, that was always throughout history the case.
Currently this is the speed at wish computers operate, which is at a physical level the speed of light.
My point is, this world always was hostile and will always be hostile, that is why religion exists.
To give people hope, for a world without this pain.

1.2K opinions shared on Other topic. I don't agree that it's necessarily wrong. I think choosing the time and circumstances of our own death is one of the most personal decisions a person can make. I also consider it one of the most sacred rights we have.
On the other hand, it's not something a person should do at a whim. I especially think that young people should give it a good long time to make a decision like that. They just haven't been around long enough to know how things can change over time.

So the only purpose in life for this person was to make others happy apparently.
Nobody asked to be sent into this world, and nobody should have the right to stop one from leaving it. There's so much that is already determined for one at birth, that solidifies at early stages of life..that past a certain point there's no point to living, one person just doesn't have enough power.
If you're going to comment on suicide being wrong, I hope you're out there actively helping depressed people or people with no hope and giving them something to live for. If not, I'd say we are in no position to judge them.31 Reply- +1 y

It comes out of self hate and works hate, two negative emotions and thought cycles. The person needs to destroy the negative thought cycle, not themselves.
And yes, I have been depressed and suicidal. Currently I'm on meds for panic disorder. Life csn be very hard, but our fight isn't meaningless.23 Reply- +1 y

Beautifully put.
Because it makes people...dead?
But seriously, the cases where a person genuinely wants to end their lives, no ifs no buts, are very rare. In most cases it's a cry for help and they're not even intending to complete the suicide. And the ones that do, usually are either intoxicated one way or another, or suffer from some kind of severe mental instability.
So you see, in most cases it's not what they really want, so it's necessary to stop them and give them the help they need.
And in those rare (very rare) cases where people genuinely want to end their lives, unconditionally - there I agree with you, it's their choice.11 Reply- +1 y
Yes, it is a very rare case that someone wants to sincerely commit suicide due to circumstances. Very rare.
Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI always wondered this too. No one signed up for this life. We had it forced upon us with no choice in the matter. And then we're obligated to live it for the sake of others? That's bull crap. Who is anyone else to tell you what to do with YOUR life? I hate when people say it's selfish to commit suicide. Life is a gift to many people, but not everyone. To some, it's a curse. It's selfish of other people to force someone who is in agonizing pain to prolong it. They don't owe anyone anything. Besides, we all die sooner or later, why try and force someone to prolong the inevitable?
Sometimes I wish I'd had a choice in being born or not. Because if I had, I probably would have opted out. This world sucks, and I wasn't made for today's society.41 Reply- +1 y
I think a large minority share your thoughts. Honestly, society does one hell of a poor job handling these people; we lock up the ones deemed too crazy and try to brainwash them.
+1 yIts wrong because you’re throwing your valuable life away. Its wrong on so many levels… not only do you take away your own life but without realizing you take so much away from your loved ones as well. The grief, the sorrow, and sadness, the burden of painful loss that you leave behind. Losing hope in yourself and in life altogether… I am a strong supporter of all the victims who died at their own hand and I cannot imagine how much pain they must have gone through to be pushed to the breaking point. We cannot claim to know, or even fully understand the tragedy that these souls had to endure. But I feel like we do need to make more of an effort in suicide prevention- tackling the problem from its roots and creating a better, more empathetic world.
02 Reply- +1 y
True that, the problem is, most people don't realize their contributions to the victim's suicide. If people were truly good and honest, there would be no reason for suicide. I find that society tends to blame people who commit suicide and label them as "selfish" and "unreasonable."
- +1 y
Exactly i completely agree. It is ignorant for one to label a person who commits suicide as selfish because you have no idea what the hell they have gone through and you have no right to say that, period. Its not selfish or unreasonable- they reached the breaking point and it pushed them to that. Most of these people make it worse for the victims instead of making it better :/ It is so important to understand and be empathetic towards these people.
Each individual's life should only be lived for himself/herself. While suicide may be seen as selfish, I think it's selfish that all the "poor friends and family" would want someone who's obviously hurting and can't go on any longer to keep suffering. I think the phrase "god only gives you as much as you can handle" is total bull$hit because it's obviously not true. People have to that people who contemplate or commit suicide most likely have depression or another mental illness. And instead of these people getting the help they need, they're ignored or told other people have it worse. Overall, if someone I knew committed suicide, I'd grieve but get over it because it was their life and their choice to end it.
12 Reply- +1 y
I agree
+1 yA lot of people consider it selfish due to the implications it has on other people such as family members, like if it depresses them and leads to their lives being ruined too :( I understand that, but it does sometimes seem like a guilt-trip. If a person wants to commit suicide then its their choice and there's alone, but I think they should at least be encouraged to try and receive some help first. Its so taboo cause I guess people are worried about talking and saying something deemed offensive when there are so many strong opinions circulating around it D:

Yeah, it makes me wonder if joining the military in a dangerous combat role would be considered selfish...after all it stresses out the loved ones and God help if the guy dies.
+1 yI actually don't feel that suicide is selfish in the usual sense of the word. People who commit suicide are usually mentally ill, it's condemned in our society to let people who aren't stable do shit like that. However, here in the states, we talk shit about suicide and don't take care of people who have psychological disorders. So, not sure what we can exactly DO about it. But suicide DOES hurt other people.

Yes a person is free to do whatever they wish because it's their feeling and emotion, but I would consider this selfish. What about the people around them? How much pain would they cause their loved one (s) by killing them self? Even if that person thinks that no one loves them, that is not true because there is always at least 1 person in your life who cares for you, even if you don't know it.12 Reply- +1 y
It is selfish if others demand that you live for their own happiness.

I'm not saying that the other party is asking you to live, I'm just saying that the person about to perform suicide should just think about the good things in the life they're leaving behind, then decide whether their decision is the right/good decision.
+1 yIn my own experience of contemplating suicide and losing friends to it, it's selfish. It's probably the most selfish act possible. It's done to relieve your pain but you have to realize how much pain it is going to cause everyone else and that everybody hurts.

...and to add, I work in emergency services. If someone presents a harm to themselves, we can have officers place the person in "arrest" or protective custody and involuntarily admit them into a hospital for ongoing evaluation and care.
- +1 y
And to restrain them in such a way involves money. Nothing is ever given freely.
- +1 y
No, it does not cost any extra money. I know because I have done it before and it is the law. I have had to restrain patients before.
Once someone poses a danger to themselves or others, they lose their right to give consent to/deny care. We essentially tell them at that point that they can either be transferred the easy way or the hard way, and if they refuse, we can physically restrain them. Trust me, we have the resources, both law enforcement and EMS personnel.
Someone who is attempting or threatening to commit suicide is not in a good state of mind and cannot make rational decisions. It is no different than murder, a life is still lost and could be preventable. - +1 y
The taxpayers pay you to restrain them and if they're still crazy, the taxpayers get crazy so you have to get out your big stick to beat some sense into that person.
Or would you voluntarily restrain that person without given an incentive to do so? - +1 y
It is part of my duties to fulfill as a emergency medical services professional, as with law enforcement personnel as well. But we try to avoid that sort of contact as much as we can. We try to persuade them to go first before we escalate it to the next level.

"For by GRACE you have been saved through FAITH. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works" -Ephesians 2:8-9
"Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED" -Romans 10:9

Completely disagree. Suicide is tragic because the victims often feel lost and unconnected with in the world. Imagine having tremendous internal pain or depression and feeling there's no one/nothing who/that can help. We are social creatures so feeling disconnected can bring an enormous amount of pain.
There was a woman who jumped off a 28-story building at my friends' university last year. I didn't think she was running away from her problems because she didn't want to deal with them. This woman stood up there and looked into her own demise, and in her mind that was still a better option than living with the pains she had in her life. Death was a better alternative because it would remove that isolation she felt with the world. When I thought about that I was tremendously saddened to know how dark of a place she had reached in her mind. It made realize how important the relationships we have with each other are because that's all we have in life really.
Sorry about the tangent.. - +1 y
That's the thing they can't deal with it. I kn ow those who are born with depression inherited have a high tendency to commit suicide. I wouldn't wish her to die though. You do. :PPPPPPPPPPPPP Most young people are obsessed with death. I'm not surprised.
- +1 y
Something about not being loved or wanting to grow old.
- +1 y
None of that made sense sentence by sentence but I'll address your points.
Re: People born with depression. I ultimately think that isn't true however some are more likely to be depressed as a product of the environment they grow into.
Young people are not 'obsessed with death.' Rather, young people often do not have a grasp of life and who they are as people. They have not fully matured and things can be very confusing; sex, relationships, what the future holds, etc. Therefore young people flirt more with the idea of death and it's really unfortunate. Some young people are just reckless because they feel invincible but I don't think the idea of having a 'death wish' applies here.
Whether that was a joke or not, I did wish that woman to die. In that way, or any way. Grow up. My previous comment clearly detailed my thoughts. - +1 y
Your reasons don't make sense. I don't have to agree with you. You should challenge your ideas with asker, not me. So don't force it on me.
- +1 y
I'm not trying to force my ideas on anyone. Your previous comment can be summed up as so: "They can't deal with it. They are born with depression. I wanted her to die. They are not loved/do not want to grow old." What?
Aside from every point not relating to the previous, it's a terribly pessimistic view of people who have depression and commit suicide. I think you would agree. - +1 y
Hello? Where did i say i want her to die?
- +1 y
There are no quick fixed solutions but i would contain her if she has no will to live. She didn't get the help she needed so she couldn't deal with it but its still fucking running away from the problem. If people really have the balls to stand for who they care. Maybe that wouldn't have happen. Period.
- +1 y
You said I wanted her to die, I do not know why. You wrote, "I wouldn't wish her to die though. You do. :PPPPPPPPPPPPP" derp
Agreed that there are no fixed solutions or even short-term solutions. However you are dismissing how difficult it is for most suicide victims to get help. Also, these people are often not open about their depression so their struggles often go unnoticed. So that's where we disagree, and why I'm not going further talking about this.
