Is calling out of work because of personal family matters a good excuse?

I usually just say I'm sick, the day of and my boss is okay with it. But, I've been at this same job for 1.5 years and I always use the excuse "I'm sick" so I don't have to come in. I would like to have off tomorrow because I need to take care of some personal matters, and honestly am stressed to the max because of this stupid job. Is it okay to say I have personal family matters I need to deal with? or will my supervisor see right through it as me wanting a Friday off?

Yes, that is a good excuse.

I've called in sick maybe 10 times in 6 years and that's how seldom I feel an employee should do so barring actual health complications. How often did you call in sick in 1.5 years? TBH, if I was your boss, I wouldn't give you the day off because it's on a Friday and it's much more likely that you'll be spending your time "fixing personal matters" doing other things. Most people only work 8-10 hours a day. Surely there's another time during Friday where you can address such matters.

Or do as 'Yaddayaddayadda02' said and find a new job.

depending on where you work you can file for stress leave. sometimes a week or two is all most people need to reset their stress levels. if you find after that time off you end up right back where you started off than it's time to think about a different job.

I would find it acceptiable having to deal with family issues and it seems like your boss is okay with you being sick so I don't see any problems with it. I can see how other bosses who don't give time off for such things though.

Most companies in the USA just have "Personal Time Off PTO" now. it is your time off and you use it however you like for whatever you like. Of course they like it better when you plan it and don't just call in and surprise them but regardless. You don't even give them a reason. You just tell them you need to take a personal day.
But it does vary by job.

if you can prepare a good detailed defense for the "urgent family matter" and maybe provide some "fake evidence" incase he asks for any then you're golden.

You don't want the job anyway, so take the day to look for a new one.

Just say you're sick they might try and sweat talk you to coming in otherwise.
