Is a family member's birthday a good excuse to miss work?

Basically I am scheduled to work until 10pm this Friday, however I have a huge party I've been planning to attend for a long time. If I said it was my grandma's birthday or something would that be a legitimate enough excuse? I work at a part time job and I'm just starting out. No lectures please I just want answers. Thanks!

I don't think so, if it was important you should have asked to be off.. when you call out someone else has to come in for you which causes a lot of unneeded stress. Ask one of your co-workers if they mind switching hours with you or just taking your hours.. I'm sure someone wouldn't mind picking up extra hours in this economy.

If you've been working less than 3 months, I would say not to try unless you know the boss personally. Employers usually don't like when their new employees start asking for Friday's off in the probation period. Also, if it were a more immediate family member, it would likely raise your chances of a "Yes".

You don't need to tell them the reason (that can remain personal). Just tell them you are unable to work that day, or tell them you can come in but you have to leave early (due to family reasons).

I don't think you can get out of the shift if it is already scheduled. The only thing you can do is maybe ask someone to switch a shift with you.

Next time request the day off, that way your boss knows a head if time and can schedule someone else for the day you requested off.

No.if you can get someone to cover you then cool.if not that's gonna sound BS to the managers

It's best to let them know well ahead of time. 2 days notice isn't very good, should ask like someone stated you can just say I won't be able to work ____ or after 7:00p.m.

No not good enough for any job if that we're the case I would always be missing work...but call in sick or yeah I find someone else to cover you.
