Why is it negative to say your work is more important than your family?

I have no problem saying that my work is the top priority for me; and that my family, my wife and my daughter come second.
I'm building a future for them as well, and how could I do that without my work and my career?
Work comes first, but for the benefit of my family and everyone else.

Because if you had to choose between your SO/children and your career, and you choose your career, you're an asshole.

You can always restart a career, change to a new one thats better, or start a work at home, or whatever, careers can and do change, modify, upgrade, etc. but you shouldn't ditch your family.

I sincerely agree. In general, I think that work allows you to live (decently, hopefully), to make your economic and life choices without depending on others. While a relationship and a family aren’t enough to male a living.
