well I don't know I'm not sure about the german soccer team but I think a few at least have college degree usually, even though they may not use them at the moment. In U. S. most athletes go through a few years of college at least.

It's a stereotype that they're dump, I don't know but I guess being good at that kind of sport takes a certain intelligence too, no?
I mean, I remember this one german goalie, don't remember his name, but as a player he seemed kinda like a dump, aggressive asshole, but then these days I saw him doing comments and he was actually quite well spoken. Though to be fair my german probably isn't at a very high standard

Well football is a contact sport, and I've read before that all those headbutting with the ball and other players actually kills brain cells. Just like when a boxer receives a blow to the head. Thousands of brain cells die. So I can easily believe that a career footballer would be not so bright.

I see what you mean. On the other hand, a lot of other people kill their brain cells by drinking, smoking or doing other drugs, which I'm assuming they don't.
I don't doubt some of them are just dump, but it'd be coincidence if most of them were. Most of to be at least of average intelligence.

Well to be fair, after 90 min of a nerve wrecking game I probably wouldn't give very articulate answers either. And some reporters ask hard questions. Like one asked this American football coach something like "if you were a newspaper editor, what would be the headline tomorrow?" What are you supposed to say to that without preparation?
It probably also takes experience in dealing with the press

Well after winning the world cup, what else would a reporter ask other than "how do you feel about it? How do you feel about how your team has played?" and similar questions.
