It really depends on the individual product.

I've seen some hair products designed for ALL types of hair (caucasian, african-american, etc).

Of course everyone's hair is different, so naturally, there's a chance your hair may not react positively to a hair product designed, specifically for African American hair types.

I'm a Nigerian woman, and have 4c (afro) hair. You wouldn't catch me using Tressame or Garnier, anything like that because it is made with sulfide.

Sulfide is a chemical that KILLS the curl pattern in African American hair.

If you have curly hair you can use a relaxer, but talk to a professional first. :)
