+1 yI'm not addicted to it but I do really like it. I dunno, anime has a wide variety in terms of art styles and genre and storylines so it's interesting and usually it's really pretty. Also, I can watch gory shit without getting squeamish like I do with live action films. Anime generally is pretty fun and well written and it's interesting to see different aspects of another culture that you would never get to see, and it's not like how it is in Western stuff where it's made a point of to show like 'these people are foreign and have different customs'. It's something that isn't made a big deal of because the target audience don't make a big deal out of it, it's day to day activity for them, so it's more organic and natural feeling. It's just a lot of fun :)

Okay, so it depends on what you like obviously but these are my personal favourites:
Parasyte: the maxim - This is kinda a sci-fi, horror-y type anime. A little gory but nothing too horrific. It's probably my favourite anime overall. Really relatable protagonist, good humour, and an interesting idea, even if a little cliched - 'aliens' coming to earth intent on destroying the human race, only one guy knows how to stop them -, but I feel like it has enough twists to be fun and keep you interested.
The Haruhi Suzumiya series - this has like the main anime, then movies, and also spin off anime and spin off manga so this is quite a lot, but it's not like watching DBZ or One Piece where you have huuuundreds (and a lot more) of episodes to watch. This is a cute anime with a really nice art style and great colours and it's generally pretty happy and funny and just about a group of kids enjoying themselves, even though they're not just ordinary people - sometimes it does get pretty emotional - +1 y
* - I sobbed like a baby, but I think it's pretty great.
Hellsing Ultimate - You can watch all of Hellsing's original series but honestly, I don't really feel like it's worth bothering, it's not really necessary and it's nowhere near as cool as Hellsing Ultimate. Badass vampires, pretty hilarious English accents and an interesting take on Dracula. This has some gore too and there's quite a few fight scenes so if you like more horror/action type stuff, this might be good for you.

Because there's different anime for everyone, but it's only in the west where anime geared toward the male sex is aired the most and the only girly one most people know about is Hamtaro and Sailormoon when there's so much more out there, and there's different genre's of anime that suit anyone's taste. You just have to know where to look and what you want to watch.

Too many to name I've seen so many over the years. I've been watching anime since childhood. It started with kiddie anime's like Hello kitty, Pokemon, and Hamtaro, but as I got older I've started watching more mature anime. I still like the kiddie one's though since they're so cute and innocent.

Those are some anime's that are in the horror, sci-fi, and vampire anime genre's. Like I said there's something for everyone, but what's mostly shown in the West are shounen anime's like DBZ, Naruto, Yokai Watch, and Pokémon. Shounen usually means "young man/boy" so shounen anime's are usually geared towards younger men age's 12-24, but anyone can like any type of genre of anime if it suits their tastes. I personally like shoujo anime's the most since I adore all things cute and innocent, and most shoujo anime's are just that. Shoujo means/is referred to "girl/young girl/young woman" usually used for any female under 25, but I like other genre's of anime too. There are more anime genre terms, but it'd take a while to list all of them and their explanations.

Generally the story lines are just different from the same "life based" writing of western culture. A lot of the stories of good anime series remind me more of extended fables than of a show, just in animated form. Granted, I know that there's a huge industry and tons of money going into anime but the work often still has the feel of a passion project, granted a lot of the new shit on crunchyroll isn't any good, but look at stories like Trigun, Wolf's Reign, FLCL, Cowboy Bebop... The list goes on, it all feels somehow genuine. There are maybe 3 shows in American culture that have felt that way over the last 5 years. But somehow you can always find 1 new anime show that has that "honest" feel to it.

When anime generate good ideas and great characters you wish where real then you'll feel like you like the anime. But if all anime us shit! Still images and animation short cuts bothers me, the Japanese voices for girls are annoying, it's like I'm watching porn. The males are betas that gets laid unrealistically. The black characters sucks in most animes. The story is trash for Shonen genre. And more.

Well, a lot of anime are story driven. Most coming in a 12 or 13 episode series but man do they get a lot done in that short time.
Aside from the story, the artwork and visuals are phenomenal. They have a wide variety of shows so there's something you'll definitely enjoy.
It beats American cartoons by a long shot.
I've been watching anime since I was 5, so I grew up on it and watched it ever since.
Anime I would recommend to get started:
1. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood
2. Cowboy Bebop
3. Samurai Champloo
4. Desert Punk
5. Space Dandy01 ReplySame question I would ask, if I'd say. I have an almost-anime-like profile picture that I re-colored from Pixiveo on my Discord, and my username is NotAnAnimeFan just to clarify everything. People keep claiming that I watch anime when I don't. So yes, I don't see the point of anime getting so hyped, even when your real life friends talk about it.

It sounds like shoujo anime, josei anime, tragedy anime, and slice of life anime might suit your tastes best instead of all the shounen anime like DBZ, Pokémon, Naruto, and etc that you see mostly aired here.
A list of starter Anime's/Manga I think might appeal more to you:
Koe no Katachi
Toradora
Suki-tte Ii Na Yo.
Usagi Drop
Aishiteru ze Baby
Lovely Complex
Kimi ni Todoke
Kaichou wa Maid-sama
Clannad
Your lie in April
Ouran highschool host club

@Other_Tommy_Wiseau nope. I watched dragon tales when I was a kid but when I got older the closest I came to watching cartoons was Lizzie McGuire haha - +1 y

Being a 90s kid, that's more sacrilegious than eating pizza with a fork and knife! I'm going to force you to watch old spongebob, animaniacs, ed, edd and eddy and dexters lab!
