I'd go with the boar for practical tactical reasons.

Its low to the ground, so it can get up underneath larger mounts, but its still higher than humans and below the reach.

Its got thick skin more likely to deflect deeper wounds, and strong bones good plowing through armored combatants.

It mostly fights with its head and tusks, so it's underbelly won't be exposed during an attack, and it's skull is especially thick for just this reason, so had injuries are less likely to fell him, unless its across the neck or a well aimed crossbow bolt from afar. Most of these vulnerabilities can be curbed with well placed armor.

I'm wanting to say the elephant but I don't know if this is a trick question as a steed is a horse thats rides into battle... (according to the uk dictionaries...) But if I could choose any animal.. then the donkey!

  Yes, that is the original definition, but the modern usage includes any mounted combat animal, especially in case of videogames, and role playing games, also commonly referred to as simply "a mount".

I like the boar actually. Seems like it would be versatile with being able to clear different terrain, probably is reasonably fast if it just charges, and it could do some damage with the tusks.

I voted tiger just because it's cool. But a polar bear would probably be the strongest fighter. The problem with polar bears and tigers is that they might eat the rider if they get hungry :P

  Also I would be too large to ride a boar or a wolf, they would pretty much be carrying their body weight on their back which would be a huge slowdown.

They are all so cute!!! I was stuck between a tiger and a bear. Bears remind me of really fluffy marshmallows. But I still chose tiger.

Tiger, they are smart, well suited for combat, and if it is large enough to ride, t can take out other mounts effectively.

I'd go with wolf, faster than the horse if you compare by size, and can be used as a fighter as well ;) (just like in Princess Mononoke or Warcraft)
