Personally I think that the makeup gender difference is more unfair to MOST women than MOST men. Having massive acne that you want to cover is one thing, so it's a disadvantage in that case.

But most people don't have massive acne like that. Therefore the makeup difference is more unfair to most women than to most men, because it increases the standards for women to look 'average'. In order to look 'average', a woman must spend time and money putting on makeup.

That's a special case. In movies and especially on TV, the sets are VERY brightly lit - to the point that it's almost uncomfortably bright if you are physically there - because the cameras, especially TV/video cameras - just aren't as sensitive to light as the human eye and need a LOT more light to look "normal."

One side effect of this is that those bright, powerful studio lights actually penetrate the outer layers of skin, especially on fair-skinned people, exposing not only beard stubble and acne, but even the veins and arteries under the skin. It makes people look shiny and sickly. For that reason, virtually everyone you see on TV that's on TV professionally, and virtually everyone you see in a movie, is wearing makeup. It's a necessity for the job.

As far as the original question - I say "do what you want to do." No one forces women to wear makeup and no one prohibits men from doing so. If I was that poor pizza-faced kid, I'd probably wear makeup...

Well first of all the female shot is totally fake. If that is the same woman she's had a hell of a lot more done then make-up. The woman on the right is about 15 pounds lighter with no double chin. He hair is completley different and there is clearly been some air brushing and other computer manipulations going on there. Make-up can do a lot but it sure as hell can't do that. If men want to wear make-up all the more power to them. The best make-up looks like your not wearing any, anyway.

on one side, why does society want us women to hide our imperfections under tons of shitty products which - breaking news - make our skin even worse? honestly, guy are lucky to not have to spend time and money on this sh*t.

I don't wear make up, but I didn't know it was "socially unacceptable". I never under stood why people care what other people think anyway. It's your life live it how you want, and do what you want. Especially in 2017 it's definitely normal for guys to wear makeup nowadays. Girls seem to usually do it to pretty themselves or make themselves feel better or more powerful, and of course guys don't mind. There just doesn't seem to be the same mindset with guys, we don't look in the mirror and go "man i'm looking super droopy/tired let me put on some makeup" we just wash our face with a hot towel and move on. Girls will be like "hey some eyeliner would really make my eyes pop", while guys on the other hand just don't seem to care. Though i know a few who do.

It doesn't exactly raise standards for women because you have to take into account how much men care. They start caring, stop caring and care to different intensities at varying levels of makeup and you can't be the judge of how much emphasis they put on makeup. Then you have to take into account how much men's influence is relative to women's and how much women care.

I don't know if women would object to men wearing makeup in public life because I don't notice it if it is a real thing. I think it's just because guys don't really have access to it in the same way. I wanted to get some basic makeup to wear outside to cover little blemishes I didn't like but I had no idea where to start. I still wonder if a little something to cover blemishes would get negative reactions from women.

I mean I’m pretty sure there’s studies showing how much makeup can affect a woman’s chances at a lot of things, most easily understood in the form of getting a job or power in the working world. Women’s attractiveness is often an important factor in their advancement.

My super macho ex wore concealer. I think men shouldn’t be shamed for this - he’d had bad acne in high school and his sister taught him this. He said it made him feel less self conscious, so he’d put some on zits into his 30s - especially if he had a presentation at work or something.

Besides that picture on your third image is of someone with chronic dermatitis, it's not the same as someone who's just got a few blemishes. That guy has a skin condition that no amount of makeup will fix.
