You feel this way because you're making the error of relating sex with love. You can have none, one, or both but neither is a requirement of the other.
For some people it is a requirment of the other, because it makes more sense. Why would you be ok with an intimate thing when you're not with the other. Also, I don't see sex for pleasure as a pleasure, I think it's gross if I don't have a minimal connection with the person. I don't see how it gives you more pleasure than masturbating.
All valid in the scope of defining your preference. I was speaking to the technical side in that you can have one without having the other.
I made the error of poorly wording my first sentence. I should've said that your error was in projecting your preference as a universal rule. Your preference has no need of a defense, nor does anyone else's.

Define self respect? If they are not being careful, then maybe they do have self respect issues. If they meet strangers and check STD test results, then that does not apply. A person can have sex with a countless number of people without having an issue with STD's if people get tested and check results often.
