I think it’s rude when customers have headphones on or are engaged in a phone call while making a transaction.
Cashiers and customer service workers are held to this ridiculously high standard to treat everyone with respect and courtesy, yet a lot of customers forget that we’re human beings.
They come in throw money on the counter, start blurting the phone number linked to their loyalty card, ignore the greeters, etc. But being on the phone and completely disregarding a worker is extremely rude. If it’s that important complete the call before you make a transaction.
I’m glad I worked with food because it’s taught me to be more self aware with workers. I honestly think most people don’t “think” when they interact with workers. They have a “your job is to serve me” mentality.
So now I always make sure to ask cashiers about their day and say hello before making a transaction to communicate “Hey, I see you as a person not just a cashier.” Whether they respond good or bad to that is on them but I make sure that I treat everyone like human beings.

The mall here in Downtown San Antonio, TX is loud on the weekends. Wearing headphones is a good idea. I have earbuds and once in the mall, I can't hear my music. Might need to get headphones.
I don't know if they hate it, they haven't said anything to me or have me dirty looks. I think they are use to it these days. When I go to check out or ask a question I take them out of my ears. I know I get annoyed when someone comes up to me asking for help and they don't remove their headphones/earbuds.
I do the same thing when I’m by myself at any store. But I take them out to communicate with the cashiers; it’s the polite thing to do.

I think you should take them off when you check out though. Other than that I don't see anything wrong with it.
If you're walking around the mall that's fine. But you should at least take it off when you're at the cashier making a purchase.
Like for me when I'm going through the drive through I turn down my music when I make my order. It's like common sense. Some do, some places I've been have signs refusing service if you're on a device etc.
I dont use devices out of respect for the person I'm dealing with, so it's never an issue.I do hate it when I am working in a store and someone has headphones on (in the situation they are at the casshier or in need of help when looking for something). Feels like I can’t wish them a good day because they won’t hear me anyway.

They must hate it. They might be telling you something important or nice and you won't hear them.
It's pretty damn annoying, also makes you a GIANT crime target.
I don't think they care, I always wear mine no matter where I go.
Have you ever been in a hurry and got behind someone in the check out line and they kept talking or receiving phone calls in line, there by holding up the line?
Just take them off before interacting with someone and you are fine!
If they're doing customer service, they should be wearing headphones because that's really rude
Most people are fine with it cuz it's better than playing the music out loud, but when someone's talking to you it's just basic manners that you should take them off
headphones/earphones to listen to music, no. a statement of LOOK AT MY HEADPHONES or BRAND... maybe
Nah there's nothing wrong with that nor is it wearing a hat inside
Probably if you’re on line and not paying attention to what is going on
Doesn't bother me at all
Non of their business if you do.
