Now following this Amy will only be twice Emily's age once in her life which is age 16 and Emily age 8 now you can see a pattern if you double Emily's age and add 4( for example 16 × 2 + 4 =36 Emily would be 32) Emily would always be 4 years behind as Amy was 8 when she was born which is year 0
Now how long would it take for Emily to reach three times Amy's age if Amy dieshalf way through the year of Emily's 22nd birthday?

She's 4 so her sister is 12. Literally just add 4. she is 16 and her sister will be 8. exactly twice as old. she is 3 and she is 9 just add 3 and you will have 6 and 12 just another example of how easy this question is. 10 and 30 add 10 one is 20 the other is 40. See the pattern here? Don't need not a single piece of advance maths for this. Literally just add the age of Emily.
They go overboard with this in school with 12 + X thing but that's really not needed for this.

(12 - 4) * 2 = 8 * 2 = 16
In 4 years Emily will be 8 and in this time Amy will be 16. Hence two times older.
Well if Emily is 4 and Amy is 12, Amy would be 8 IF she's twice as old as Emily IF she's 4.
What if Emily died before she was 8yrs old...
If Amy is older than Emily, she'll never be twice as old as Emily.
12 - 4 = 8
-> E+8=A; 2E=A -> A = 16
