Have you never read a book, or watched a movie or TV show? A video game is fundamentally the same thing, just in a different format with a MUCH more active movement against it. (The entire first print of of James Joyce's Dubliners was bought up by a guy who hated books, and burned every copy; many of the criticisms leveled against them were those fired at games today). Heck, Planescape: Torment is often described as "the best book you'll ever play" and I can say from experience that's not invalid, either as praise OR as criticism. It's true that the vast majority of games don't qualify as art, but the vast majority of recorded video consists of empty security camera footage; do we dismiss movies on that basis? Heck, I can plug my force feedback joystick in and experience something that's not only visual and auditory, but tactile; how many other forms of media can claim that?
But from your mention of Discord, I'm guessing you're talking about the other side of gaming. The social side. This is where the real disparity between the sexes in video gaming lies. Why? Because women bond face-to-face. Men bond shoulder-to-shoulder, and doing something together forges and reinforces those bonds, even if the thing being done is digital. Would you be happier if he was out at the pub with the guys, or camping out in the woods with them? Those sorts of things are the alternatives.
The social bonds our loved ones form with others often look strange to us, but it's important to take them seriously, even if we don't understand them. If he's reading a book, and you want to do something with him, he can put it down and pick it up at another time- pretty much any other time, really. But if he was somehow reading it with several other people, asking him to stop was he's doing is also interrupting all of them. That's not to say it's wrong of you to ask that he spend more of his time with you, but asking him to spontaneously put down that controller is also asking him to spontaneously let down everyone he's playing with. Plan head.
Collaboration is always interesting, and you get to know some teamwork. Games normally give us a challenge we overcome together, or if they are single player games, a way to socialize and brag about our virtual accomplishments to other people that understand the significance.
Is it silly? Yeah, kinda (excluding the whole pro-gamer scene where cash prizes abound and they get visas to compete in tournaments out of country), but games are meant to be fun. Unless they're taking it seriously, games are just a way to socialize with other people and show off.
As for myself, I have a bit of a problem. I LOVE trying to make the most ridiculous build/weapon/combo possible to either break the game, annoy the hell out of everyone (I'm a bit of a troll sometimes), or try to somehow use the low tier equipment in high tier missions in challenging or amusing ways (game designers always seem to make the most fun equipment stuff you can't use in the "meta"). For example, Warframe has mods that can change the aspects of your weapon, one of the aspects being Flight Speed/Projectile Speed. Some mods allowed -100% Projectile Speed, which mean you "shot" the bullet and it just stayed where you left it. The funny part was the bullets still dealt full damage to any enemy they hit; you could make literal bullet walls. I've done a bunch of stupid stuff in Warframe, and I'm at over 4000 hours in it (over 6 years)... Still a huge time sink I could have definitely used more productively. That's just one game as well (although it is the game I have the most hours in).
My boyfriend doesn't really use Discord, but he plays games most days and is practicing to become pro. 4-6 hour pracs like 3-4 times a week and then games on top of that. It's a time-consuming hobby for sure.
I've learned to accept that tournaments and games are important and more than just fun and games for him. I game myself too, but definitely not on a competitive level or even anywhere near as seriousky as he does. For me it's just a fun thing to do on a day off, for him it's an investment to the future.
That being said, I would get annoyed if casual gaming limited our time together and I understand why spouses would feel negatively about gaming. Especially if they spent more time with friends than me. But that goes for any hobby, not just gaming.

thank you, this comment really helps. yet my boyfriend spends around 10 hours on a daily basis. isn't it too much?
My guy has little time to play video games. Sometimes he plays 2-3 times in a month. Sometimes a little more. Sometimes he doesn't play video games for months. He really likes his business and doesn't consider working towards his goals a chore.
I play far more regularly than he does mainly because I work from home and work less hours. Far less.

wht you are saying could be right when it comes a certain category of females. i, personally devote all my time for my man, as i consider him my priority. sometimes i try to play or watch his streams so i could share with him wht he feels... but its pretty unfair when he gets to spend literally all the day there, so im trying to see boy's pov , thts all.
I met my girlfriend on Discord. In a server that is not about video games. And now we play games together online sometimes. We both spent much of our time on Discord socializing before we met. And we both already played video games before meeting each other too.
In other words the question contains a lot of assumptions I know are false in my life and hers. And in lots of other people's lives too. A large number of the people I've known on Discord have been female, including about half of my close online friends. Most servers I've been in were not mainly about video games and many did not contain a dedicated gaming channel. And I've known a number of avid female gamers online. Although I admit the proportion of males was higher.
Girls can be gamers (and guys can be not-gamers) Girlfriends and boyfriends can game together. Discord is not just for playing video games.

Videogames can be very fun and entertaining. Multiplayer games allow us to play together in one game and interact with each other. I personally don't play those a whole lot since I started making my own money (around 2 hours) so that I can do the things I always wanted to do, all of which cost more real money than videogames.
Think of it like dancing! Women love dancing, right? And how much they enjoy it. We may not get why women (or anyone) enjoy dancing but I don't question it. I accept it and I don't have any reason to be against it whatsoever.
Doesn't mean our hobbies make us love the other any less.
I think it's important for each partner to cultivate a life separate from the other one. Maybe getting married can rewrite this, but if you are dating, you need a stable life that can hold you up if the relationship fails.

Try https://boardgamearena.com/ They have TONS of board games turned digital and is quite active. I play with previous coworkers on there every now and then, but mostly just play with randos. You do have to get the premium for some of the games and/or the expansion packs, but if you pay for the year it's $24.
