You can to a certain degree, however our subconscious mind is a right bitch and wants it’s pound of flesh.

The area to look at is Lucid dreaming and keeping a dream Journal.
The Sleep Foundation has some decent resources.

https://www.dreams.co.uk/sleep-matters-club/a-beginners-guide-to-lucid-dreaming/the Ted Talk does cover things.
Also look at a Dream Journal.
with a dream journal you are looking at frequency and repetition of dreams and nightmares.
Some reviews. Pinch of salt and make sure not paying for stuff that is free elsewhere.

The short answer, yes you can but your mind is a right bitch and will try and do stuff.
Yes you don’t fall off that cliff, you fly…. Then a fucking big dragon eats you..

I can't control my dreams or nightmares aside from that one lucid dream but I do have a devil may give a crap attitude about things I've been stuck in a ground hog day loop during a zombie apocalypse that ended in alligators eating me and I still made time to drive around a Walmart eating THC infused skittles
Nightmare - It’s your fear.
Can I control it or not?
- I have done it before, so I will say I can.
Can you control what you are afraid of?
I can control not to be afraid of snakes… But I can’t control feeling scared of losing my family. That’s my worst nightmare.
Then you ask me, how can I control it?
I can control my nightmare while sleeping cause I can remember it’s just a dream. That’s easy. That’s just a dream, so you know you’ll wake up soon.
The worst type of nightmare is the one when you are awake… You can’t wake up and find out it’s just a dream. Instead, you crave sleeping, cause when sleeping you forget your real life nightmares.
All of our biggest fears will come to the reality, unfortunately. It’s in possible to be ready for them but it’s important to know, what you are scared of, will happen someday. We won’t have grandparents, parents, sons or daughters forever. We lose people. That’s the worst type of nightmares, unspeakably painful. So, enjoy each moment with your family.

Can you manipulate your own nightmares?

Have you ever been having a nightmare and then realized you were dreaming and were able to change the outcome? For instance, I had a dream about being back in high school in a class I hated and I was going to do a speech in front of the class. All eyes were on me and my heart was pumping. Then I realized I was having a dream and said to myself, "What the fuck! I already graduated and don't have to do this anymore. So I just threw my speech paper on the teacher's desk and walked out. I should have changed my grades in the book while I was at it. How about you, when did you realize it was a dream and did you change the outcome?

No. Always have vivid and detailed movie type, and can’t tell the difference. I’m happy to be woken out of them.
I am a lucid dreamer. When I dream or have nightmares they do look very surreal but there are tell signs in between events that alerts me and I’m able to direct such dreams/nightmares to a storyline or conclusions I’m comfortable with.
Control? Perhaps. Redefine? Definitely. I've never defined any of my dreams as a nightmare. I have had very intense dreams where my heart is beating like a hummingbird. Where I wake up drenched in sweat. But terrified never. If a dream is too intense I'm able to ask my self if I can feel anything. Smell something. If not I know I'm dreaming.
I am the monster who hunts other monsters in my nightmares.
The ability to control a dream is called lucid dreaming. It's suggested that about 20% of people have experienced a lucid dream.
No, but often if you have lucid dreams, you are cognizant enough in the dream to control the dream.
Sure. You face your fears instead of trying to forget it. Your conscious mind may forget but it's still in your subconscious mind. Once you face your fears, it won't matter if you have a bad dream if you know how to handle what you're scared of.
Sadly no, I have to either get woken up or I have to just let it happen

No, that is one of the things that makes it so scary.
Sometimes. When you can control your dreams it's called lucid dreaming.
I don't think so. My brain seems to have a pre-determined plot that kicks in and is unstoppable.
