Why was only the woman's reputation tainted for being unfaithful or the lover but not the man's?

It's only been in recent times that nowadays cheaters and lovers (esp if they're aware the person is taken) of both genders are talked bad about in my area. No one likes cheaters nor homewreckers (man or woman) that destroys families. But why was in the past only the woman's name got smeared but not the man?

He's just as guilty too. An unfaithful husband is worthless. No one stole him from you; he willingly chose to cheat. If a man gets involved with someone else's girlfriend or wife and there are children involved, that's also a homewrecker.

In the past, if a woman was unfaithful or a married man's mistress, only her name got smeared and she was hated by the townpeople. Only she was badly talked by our own gender too 24/7 for years. Meanwhile the women kept excusing the men, putting him as a saint that did no wrong. Even the wife would place the mistress more at fault while the men would leave the unfaithful woman and blame her. Why was it that way before?

Also... if a woman of that bad reputation had a daughter... that poor little girl got talked bad about to just for being the daughter of a sloot. That poor girl's reputation got tainted too.
