It seems that you already know the answer. For self-defense, use either Federal Tactical reduced #00 loads, or use #1-#4 Buck in regular loads. Pattern it out of the shotgun you're going to use at the ranges you're likely to use it, so you have a REAL idea of what kind of spreads you can expect (it will probably be less than you think at "in the home" distances).
Do NOT use slugs for self-defense. They're likely to over-penetrate, and you are legally responsible for every round you discharge.
If you are trying to get rid of an attacking elk, moose, or brown bear, than slugs are what you want - but even they aren't likely to do anything like an instant stop, so expect them to get angry.

If it were against some one threatening my family buckshot to make him hurt longer. Some one shooting at me I would use a slug to kill them quick no such thing as wounding them with that
Depends on what you are using it for. Don't they use slugs for bigger animals? I assume "buckshot" can also be used on deer, but don't they create more damage and risk just injuring the animal?
Depends on what I'm hunting or if I'm at home and using it for home defense

Obviously it depends on the exact application, but I would generally choose buckshot over a slug.
I bought a handgun and a shotgun. I am covered either way.
Slugs my guy depends on what you’re hunting but a slug will be more effective in make sure it stays down
Depends on what the goal is, I guess.
Depends if you got aim or not 😂
Depends on what I'm hunting honestly.
SOOO what are you shooting at?
Home defense, no.4 buckshot. No 1 or even 00 buck.
Buckshot.
