I stupidly did that today for the first time. I didn't close the thing at all. I pumped the gas and drove off 😭😭Good thing, I didn't drive far.

I haven't done that, BUT I have left the filler door open and driven off few times. It's been forever since I've done that.

It is a spring loaded little fitting that closes up automatically when you pull out the gas nozzle.
