Why the need to reconfirm something they don't like hearing?

Whether it's a verbal confrontation or someone trying to turn it physical, I've heard of this:

You tell them off, you don't want to hear it and even ended with an ''**** off, get lost''. Then they're like ''What did you just say'' or ''Say it in my face''

If the person already heard it clearly, why even the need to reconfirm it?

They already heard it. It's a threatening mocking tone when they are asking you to repeat said bad words again.
