  @Guardian45 Cicadas are rather picky about the size of the branch in which they set-up camp. They like branches between about 1/4" and 1/2" in diameter. We had a crab apple tree that had a vast majority of branches in that thickness range, so the tree was like a Holiday Inn for the little creeps. When they take over a majority of the branches, the branches don't get nourishment (upward) from their roots, and the roots don't get the benefit (downward) of the results of any photosynthesis in the leaves.
