This is a question in the series on Cities of the World. Each question contains several things about a city and the goal is to guess what city that is. Unlike the country questions, there is no starting letter hint. We'll try to have a new question each day.

Hint: The city may or may not be one of the cities in the picture.

* There are 22 universities in the city

* The only Japanese Sumo gymnasium outside Japan is located here

Not sure why only guys answered this one...
The correct answer is Sao Paulo Brazil, not Rio de Janeiro

Some details (including why it's not Rio) ...
Sao Paulo has 12 million people, Rio only has 6.4 million
The polluted river is the Pinheirus; Rio has a bay, not a river
The nearest ocean is Santos; Rio is on the ocean
Sao Paulo's 13 lines, 157 stations is massive compared to Rio's 3 lines, 42 stations
Sao Paulo has the largest Japanese population of any city outside Japan, hence the Sumo gym

My guess would be Sao Paulo in Brazil. They speak Portuguese there, and if it was founded by two priests, I can see them naming the city after Saint Paul.

Portuguese makes me instantly think of Brazil, and colonization of South America in the 1500's is consistent. I will guess São Paulo.

I have no idea, but I'm guessing it's probably in Portugal or Chile. So I'm gonna cheat.

Oh, THAT? ! Yeah, I would've never guessed that! I barely even know this city exists! I probably never even heard of it beyond middle school.

The no spoiler answer is the place with the big famous statue on the hill. OK, so that's a partial spoiler. It's a large Portuguese speaking city. It's not the capital. I thought it was on the ocean, but apparently it's not. It's on water and close to the ocean though.

I'll guess Sao Paolo, Brazil. Formula One races there and from what they say it's a crime-ridden, very populated, dirty place.

Anything in Portugal would be older, so gotta be Brazil. Pretty sure Rio is on the ocean, so guessing São Paulo?

I want to say Rio de Janeiro. So that’s my guess.

But if I’m wrong on that front, I would assume it’d have to be Sao Palao

Wait wtf? So you’re telling me a city called “River of January” doesn’t even have a river running through it?

@WhiteBoyChill That's correct. The Europeans that first landed there saw this big bay and didn't explore it inland. They thought it was the mouth of a river, and since it was January, they called the area "River of January". Later explorations discovered that it was just a bay, no river.
