Do Animals Play Like Humans Do?

Have you ever stopped to wonder whether animals play, and whether their experience is anything like our own?

Humans are animals... That said, other animals definitely do play. Dogs for example like to pick up sticks and chew on them. Sometimes they playfully throw them in the air and try to catch them. When it comes to ball like objects they often fling them across the ground to get them to roll and then chase after them like they are a small animal. They race each other for fun. They wrestle with each other playfully. If you give them squeaky toys they with lick them and try to make them squeak either by squeezing them or nose butting them. If you give them a rope, they will play tug-o-war with a human or with other dogs. Sometimes they play games of keep away with a toy or other object and see if you or other dogs can capture the item from them. They will play fetch with balls, Frisbee, etc. When it comes to dogs if they give you a high pitched bark, that is usually a playful bark. They want some attention and to play with you or be petted.

When I was on a farm we could throw a ball in for the pigs. They would all start playing "soccer". One pig would take off running with the ball, kicking and nosing it. around. All the other pigs chased the first one trying to get the ball. When one managed to get it, everyone chased the new ball handler.

No. Animal play is generally fake fights or chases. Like my dogs will body slam eachother jump, roll and snarl at eachother. Hell they even bite eachother. And it looks like they’re going for the kill. But all it takes is one serious bark to end the play.

Animal play is often fake fights, it’s basically the same as us playing sword fights or gun fights
