I think some are still working the system and collecting unemployment, but I'm not sure. What do y'all know that I don't know?
There is pretty much always going to be some unemployment. That isn't even too negative of a thing in a market.
As for there being a lot of positions unfilled I will contribute two pieces of information that are important to me:
1. Very few of these are attractive positions. They are unfilled not because no one wants work but because they are too far below where they need to be. Compare salary offered on the unfilled ones and the ones being filled for example.
2. It is a fairly common practice among companies to have some near constant positions open without sincere intentions to fill them - if the company is large enough to have PR concerns. This creates a small opportunity to catch a remarkable hire but more importantly makes the company appear more successful as it will seem to be expanding. It also alleviates some short-term frustration with overworkes employees as a hiring process is seemingly on-going. More common than you'd think!
If you filtered for needs-to-be-filled positions that offer reasonable wages, the majority of the openings go away. Of course not all, but the ones remaining are the jobs actually available. And out of those, near all are being competed for.

Your question assumes that there are a fixed number of positions available, and if some positions are unfilled, then the people who formerly filled them are now unemployed.
But the number of positions available is not fixed. The number of positions available increases or decreases with both actual and predicted demand. When employers are unable to fill positions, that means the compensation offered is too low to attract workers. If they increased the amount they were willing to pay, then more people would be interested in working for them.

Well I did it by investing for the past 25 years. I got hurt at work. And I just didn't go back. But to be fair I make about the same not working as I did working. So I was still already struggling with "why am I still working here". Before I got hurt. I think it's because it's the nature of man to work and stay busy. The time off has offorded me the opportunity to really look at my investments and see what I can be doing better. Because let's be honest, there's always room for improvement.
I asked the same thing. I lost my teaching job because of covid and collected unemployment for over a year. Once the benefits ran out there was really nothing else I could qualify for. I don't know how people pay their bills either.
Didn't a good section of the population give up on finding work years ago? They aren't considered part of the workforce, therefore they're not unemployed.
Nobody wants those bullshit wages. If employers start paying better their businesses will be staffed.
A good question.
