I have two pets, a cat and a ferret, it's gonna be one soon cause my cat is diabetic but I know she also has kidney failure, I gotta poke her with insulin every 12 hours but I can see the kidney failure is getting to her, she's limping and drinking a lot of water and pissing water basically, she's old but we refuse to put her down like we did with the other cat because after thinking of it, I wouldn't want someone choosing to put me down if they don't know what I want so you know

This is the first time I've ever heard of a Diabetic Cat to be honest! That has to suck. As long as you're taking care of them Medically, in regards to their illnesses, you don't have to do anything. Your cat, for how long has he/she been diabetic? If they pee a lot, it most likely means their blood sugar is high. Ideally you'd do a quick 5 second blood-test, but that was originally designed for humans I suppose. You might wanna purchase such device? For the sake of your cat, he/she can feel literally everything we feel.

You Do Not want HBS - High Blood Sugar, And Definitely nor LBS - Low in your cat's system, it's devastating in sensation.

Could you tell me the name of the insulin you inject him/her with?

I don't know the exact name of it but it's small glass bottle and the insulin looks kinda clear white like sierra mist

Well, I reckon the name would be written on it, along with the manufacturing company? Elseways it might as well be Water you're injecting her with XP
Actrapid, Humalog, Humulin? No need to let me know, but hopefully you'd care to check next time you inject her. Since every medication is different, and to speak the truth, ideally humans with type 1 & sometimes type 2 diabetes need to take 2 Two types of Insulin. 1 Every 12 hours/24 hours (depending on the insulin) to act as a base for the body to not raise the blood sugar - while asleep/not eating (the body does elevate its sugar levels Even when you don't eat, yes, just much slower than when you consume food.), and 1 before the 3 daily meals every day (breakfast, lunch, dinner) as to balance the immediate sugar rushing down the system & reducing it to its normal values.

If you don't take insulin when you're diabetic, your blood sugar levels will start to rise. 80 - 180 is the normal value, once it exceeds 180 your kidneys will start working overtime to filter and absorb the extra sugar. When the kidneys can't keep up, extra sugar goes into the urine. Thus peeing a lot, which may cause kidney failure on the long run. The levels keep on rising 250+ 300+ till there's a risk of Ketones forming within the blood. I don't wanna get very technical (because I really don't know why lol) but at this point the patient needs to go to the hospital to have fluid replacement treatment, and electrolytes replacement performed on them. At this point, the patient feels headache, extreme thirst, fatigue, desire to hit the bathroom a lot, and would smell ketones out of their mouth. If it surpasses 400+ - 500+ now you start feeling your head is burning, your whole body hurts, almost every cell, vomiting every 15+ minutes, dizziness, blurry vision, can't talk/walk, you'd wish for someone to end your life as to keep this agony away at this point. Should it exceed 600+ - 1,000+ Now you're in a Diabetic Coma. Your body is fighting for life, and may or may not succeed. Depending on the doctors' speed to get insulin & electrolytes into your system. Ideally should you live (XP) you'd spend 3 days in intensive care, followed by 7 days into insulin-regulation courses, as to keep what's happened to to you from occurring again.

I know the comments I make are funny and light hearted ( or dark hearted if you look close) but this is a very serious subject. I had a basset hound named Hank when I was younger. We were born the same year so we grew up together and he was truly my best friend. Him and my twin brother and I would play, fight, get into trouble. Constantly and it drove my mum insane. She referred to us as the terrible triplets. And the year we all turned 13, I lost them both. I watched how Hank suffered and fought til the very devastating end. And it hurt a lot. I dont think any other pet or person should have to go through that. So as sad as it is, I say put them down.

I can relate to this all too well. I had to put my best friend down January of 2022. It was the worst day of my life. She helped me through some really dark days and I’d rescued her, helped her through a thyroid condition, and renal failure. But she stopped eating and after a ton of tests we scheduled a surgery where they found extensive cancer all throughout her body. I could of held on, I wanted to. But I didn’t want her to suffer any more so they put her down in the surgery. Only thing I can say- I don’t regret exploring every option first, but once you start putting your own feelings ahead of their well being, you have to let go. If you think she still has a decent quality of life though, I wouldn’t give up yet.

I had a cat that was 20 years old. He really was like a member of the family. He was having kidney failure and after taking him to the vets a couple of times so they could give him an IV fluids we elected to have him euthanized. I cooked him a hamburger for lunch which was his favorite. We took him to the vets and after the vet gave him the shot I just held him until it was over. The vet came back and listened for a heartbeat and told me that he was gone. He is buried in my backyard and I say hi to him every time I mow my lawn

I think i would have to look at the whole situation and if they are suffering tremendously yes. I would put them out of their misery.

But i would talk to the vet to see how much suffering comes with what is happening to them.

This is the first time I've ever heard that a cat can get diabetes. It's not like they drink pop all day or eat sugary foods. Or that they even have to have insulin. I know it's expensive for human so can imagine it is not cheap for animals either.

It's not cheap but I've already poked her with over 100 needles and the bottle is only half empty so it's not constant refills cause the dose for a cat is like 1 small line on the needle

I've put them down. My twenty-one year old cat was losing her eye sight, practically screamed at the walls, couldn't even get into her litter box any more, and had a hard time eating.

My fourteen year old golden retriever hurt her leg badly and we couldn't afford the surgery.
