Not really, it's fuck all to do with land, and more to do with the porous border being exploited by traffickers and smugglers.
More strife, means less border and army; catching smugglers and traffickers.
A drug dealer can get a death sentence in Turkey, and narcotics are pretty cheap there, so not worth the risk. On the other hand, trafficking can get you a years wage in a week, and there is little risk and jail sentence if caught.
