The fraction 3/4 ... how do you say it?
There is a sort of Star Trek or ship commanding language which perhaps only exists on television that I quite like where you will hear people saying things like 'One half impulse power'.
You just can't say that in the UK, not at any time where it mattered, because the British ear so badly wants to hear 'one AND a half' it will totally ignore the seemingly glaringly obvious omission of the word 'and'.
You don't NEED it so we don't use it, if it's just one or a half then you just say 'half' e. g. 'half a cup of sugar' so the ONLY time we hear 'one half' is in these extremely limited circumstances which almost certainly involves a semi bald man commanding a ship of somekind.
Three-fourths about three-fourths of the time, and three-quarters about one-quarter of the time. If needed to be appropriate to the content, I may say 75%.
Thanks for the MHO.
If & when I'm referencing it to numerical measurements or volume, I would choose to say "three fourths".
If & when I'm referencing it to area or time, "three quarters" sounds more appropriate to me.
Thank you @AviatorTom for the MHO. :)
I've never heard it said three fourths, is that an American thing.
yes it is
@Girlsontop I am American and I never hear anyone say three-fourths.
@Pudsmucker Yeah if you're actually working with exact numbers it is common, but not in everyday language like we're three-quarters done with our project.

i usually hear like the coin quarter , three quarters ooo because we in u. s have this coin, but i would prefer fourths same as other fractions sixths sevenths same should use four.
i use all of them, though the "three over four" is very rarely used and then that is usually only to visually describe the fraction such as teaching a child how to write it out. most commonly i say 3 quarters but often enough say 3 fourths too.
Because quarter is 0.25 and three of them makes 0.75. Its just easier to pronounce three-quarters.
Always its 3 quarters , International. Certainly none of the other BS.
not so obvious, compare 1/5 1/6 use the number fifth sixth so equally 1/4 3/4 not b. s.
You left out the Boston accent option, where it would be "fee-quatahs".
