Are people mooching/ begging on the rise?

Question

I get times are hard, things are getting more expensive but damn seems like I can’t go anywhere these days (work, home, gas station, etc…) without someone trying to mooch cigs, money, alcohol, etc. Like damn, do I look like miss rich bitch to you? These people need to get a job and stop trying to beg/ mooch off people that are struggling to survive as well.

I don't know I haven't experienced it. In my country even the poorest people get enough money to live if they go on welfare so the justification for begging and mooching is low. There used to be some homeless drunks with their dogs (who probably rejected help) hanging out in the city center but they've been gone for almost 10 years now. The only beggars I've seen recently (like 2 years ago) were part of a organised crime ring carted in from eastern Europe. They were dressed like business men and they would ask you can you help me with the ticket machine and when you'd help them they would not have enough money and they'd try and pressure you into making up the difference. And then they'd probably try and refund the ticket or something I don't know. But I never paid them anything and I haven't seen them in a while so I guess they weren't that profitable, which I'm glad about. I did get ripped off by a landlord/housemate but he was just a total scumbag and asshole and pos and greedy sob he was not part of a wider trend. He did it to everybody when he felt like he could get away with it.

There are Help Wanted and Now Hiring signs all over, but my area is full of homeless people. Many panhandle, and the others mostly steal, burgle, and commit fraud. They have zero interest in working - they are nearly all alcoholics and/or drug addicts, and want to be free to drink or do drugs on their own schedule, and don't want to be told what to do.

Unfortunately, the government enables them in so many ways. California literally pays them a monthly stipend, but they are also enabled because even when police catch them committing a crime, the DA almost never prosecutes them, so the business or individual who they vandalized, stole from, or injured is left to deal with the aftermath on their own, while the criminal is released to do it again tomorrow.

Of course, if you are a middle class person who does something minor wrong, even by accident, the same DA will prosecute you to the fullest extent possible.

This is why people have been taking things into their own hands, which is a terrible outcome, especially with a vindictive DA.

Depends on how often. Even with my best friend on disability for schizophrenia and bipolar, the entire near 20 years I've known her she only asked me twice. She mainly handles her own, which is good.

A few times, sure. But it'd be a problem if it was very frequent, like once a month or once a week.

I actually see fewer people asking me for money or cigarettes in public. That might have more to do with the fact that I quit smoking 5 years ago, though.. Indeed, I'm near a city that is making an effort to provide affordable housing, in general, so I don't see many people in a financial situation they could genuinely complain about, overall. People do anyway, of course, but it kind of a "cuckoo's nest" situation. I think it has just become trendy to complain about being poor no matter what perhaps in response to how it used to be trendy to pretend to be rich no matter what..

It's bad. They're at every entrance and exit I can think of. Even just getting gas, some random starts hitting me up for something cold to drink.

I don't care what the excuse is... Money for their basketball team, pregnant and homeless, and on and on with all sorts of excuses... Bottom line, NOT MY PROBLEM.

It certainly is and the statistics are proving it. German churches, NGOs and private initiatives are operating around 900+ soup kitchens/food banks in the country and more and more of them are running at capacity. Of course with the Ukraine war we have 1,1 million additional people here that nobody planned for, but that doesn't really change the current status quo.

Hard to say. When I worked in a city and commuted, there were always people looking for handouts (in the city). Now- since I no longer have to commute, these people are off my radar. I do see occasional people with signs standing on busy corners. I will give them a card to our church Food Pantry. They can get up to $100 retail value of food every week- just have to come and pick it up- but so many will toss the card. Probably looking for cash to buy non-essential stuff.

I would say mooching/panhandling/bagging has increased in my metro area. I have even been approached by moochers even on Instagram.
I even suggested employment opportunities where I knew people were hiring. They had refused the opportunity to go to work. Where I worked had great benefits and a great retirement plan if you stuck with him. Because panhandling they can make from $60,000 to 100,000 a year. It is sad that people play on people's generosity.

There is an economic crises since the ukraine war. Things went up. plus the internet made people aware of luxerious stuff they dream to have. And do not have the means to. In the past billionaires would enjoy their summer holiday on their private Islands alone with their billionaire friends and no poor people would see the kind of life they live. Now they boast about it online. Poor people became aware of these Luxuries and they want a piece too so they Resort to any act to Obtain money
