That's not completely correct. Burning is colloquial for oxidation. Many materials can oxidize at high temperatures, but some can also oxidize at room temperature, such as iron (rust) or copper. Gold, on the other hand, cannot burn or oxidize. That is why it is a rare precious metal.

@_blank_ If you have a vat of molten gold and dropped a handful of diamonds into it, would they melt into the gold or, when it was poured into bars and allowed to cool, would the bar have diamonds, or even diamond crystals, embedded in it?
