Today is Mardi Gras, but do you guys know about CAJUN Mardi Gras?

The Mardi Gras we know today originated in Mobile, Alabama in 1703 with the first parade being held there in 1830. But, in a few parishes in central Louisiana, you can experience a DIFFERENT kind of Mardi Gras, the closest thing you'll find to the Mardi Gras that was celebrated in medieval France. In fact, did you know what Mardi Gras is the literal French translation of "Fat Tuesday"? But the tradition goes back even further to Roman times. But, if you like tossing beads to bare breasted women riding on colorful floats, Cajun Mardi Gras may not be for you. While women are allowed to watch the festivities, it is strictly forbidden for them to partake. There have even been reports of women being violently chased off for attempting to do so. The French take their traditions very seriously. Men wear elaborate costumes and masks to scare away evil spirits, while going around town asking for donations of any kind, but beer and chickens are always popular. The processions involve alcohol, horses and a chicken, probably not the best combination and death or injury is always a possibility. Residents of these Cajun villages have been known to board up their homes and businesses when the Mardi Gras come rolling through town, as it can get pretty wild. But hey, Fat Tuesday is about committing as many sins as possible before Lent!

Here is some of what you can expect to see during Cajun Mardi Gras. The footage is accompanied by the official song of Cajun Mardi Gras. I will post both the French and English lyrics below.

So what do you think? Better than tossing beads to bare breasted women?
