Is it normal to look super ugly in pubic bath room mirrors?

When I look at the mirror at home or at pictures of me I feel like I look fine and sometimes even great but in every public toilet mirror I look like a completely different person (no matter which angle of lighting). Is this normal and which mirror should I trust?

Most home mirrors have at least several light sources - a "bar" or a row of individual bulbs - so that there is both a lot of light and light coming from multiple angles - including a lot of reflected light. This helps to cancel hard shadows and provides finer, softer detail. If you look at "makeup mirrors" - the kind you often see in backstage areas - they traditionally have a row of lights not just across the top of the mirror but also down each side. This does even more canceling of harsh shadows.

Public bathroom with only overhead lights

Public bathrooms often have either a single light over the mirror, or, even worse, only an overhead light - often a single bulb or a fluorescent fixture. With the light coming from above and behind you, you get very harsh shadows on your face and features.

The lighting makes a HUGE difference. So huge it cannot be overstated.

Part of it is the lighting in bathrooms is usually that ugly flourescent blue light.

Part if it is the industrial break resistant mirrors they put up deform slightly with the imperfections of the wall in cheaper places, so you'll get a funhouse mirror effect, but like.0005% of what a mirror at a carnival would do so you don't notice it.

You can see it if you bounce a laser off the glass.

I think it's in your head. You're appearance doesn't magically change depending on the mirror you're looking at.

Your eyes only reflect you in a bad way and your brain waves show you the things you see from a different angle. If you get a nice perspective, don't let your brain deceive you and make you think whether it is telling you the truth or lying from that point of view.
