In his own words, "I first heard a Moog in 1971 and became very interested in its possibilities. Now I’m working with a VS04. I used it on my new album, which will be called "Music of My Mind," and that’s exactly what it is because the synthesizer has allowed me to do a lot of things I’ve wanted to do for a long time but which were not possible till it came along. It’s added a whole new dimension to music. After programming the sound, you’re able to write or process the melody line immediately and in as many different manners as you want.

• 52 years ago (March 3, 1972), Stevie Wonder defined what an "artist's classic run" could mean by releasing the groundbreaking masterwork "Music of My Mind."

Wonder played all of the instruments on this album except trombone by Art Baron and guitar by Howard "Buzz" Feiten on the brilliant "Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)?"

"Music Of My Mind," signifying Stevie Wonder’s new fully integrated signature sound, style, and personal form of expression, would forever change the face of R&B and popular music.

1. Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)" is one of Stevie's best compositions. He was the first to truly herald his use of the synthesizer as a vital emotional ingredient of his music. This song is actually in two quite different parts. The first one is a lovely mid-tempo ballad with gently seductive singing and superb high backing vocals. Once that part is over in earnest, the tempo slows down considerably, and we are now taken into a whole new world.

2. Seems So Long is another slow, spacey ballad with ethereal and futuristic effects and a wonderful T. O. N. T. O. synth part. A supreme example of how music can be deeply emotional and affecting without being cloying, thanks to the use of contemporary but always resonant instrumental techniques used in Wonder's innately musical manner.

Wonder was 22 when Music Of My Mind was released, and had just signed a revamped contract with Motown that earned him more money and more artistic control. Wonder took that and freaking ran with it, enlisting the creators of the TONTO as associate producers. The result is space-age R&B.
