Is Daylight Savings Time A Good Idea, Or Utterly Ridiculous?

Question

For those who don't know about it, in certain parts of the world at a certain time of the year, we move our clocks forward one hour. Don't ask me why we do this, because there are no reasons for it (no good ones, anyway) and it makes precisely zero sense.

the change next week is good appropriate benefits because the sun time eoild be when we sleep so better to change clock... and stay that as permanent time zone at least in u. s. not based on gmt- minus 4!

in general the idea is backward stupid because sun time added evening without clovk change! but as above wasted before we wake for jobs.

in fall the "fall back" magnified the problem of dark evening terrible!

more dark in nature can't return to standard time, when MORE DARK. then adding dark time to more dark is absurd.

worse considering most jobs common 9 to 5 so the change in November in new york city caused sunset BEFORE job ends and drive home after tired job when dark!

the only justifiable clock change is between nov. 12 but move opposite! so sunset called 18:40 until jan. 3, to prevent driving in twilight when EYES tired after work on computer etc. then drive twilight is bad. if not change that then keep summer clock permanent in autumn no switching. like gmt minus 4 changes to gmt minus 3 and stays permanent. but nobody cares about adding avoidable risk to car crashes.

bottom line: better to shift each u. s. timezone number, in march, nearer gmt by one but then stay permanent.

Those who approve of it are a type I would rather not be around. Long daylight hours bring me down and I don’t need some future skin cancer patient telling me how much they love long days and hot weather. They’re a very loud majority, where I am anyway. I’m an introvert so shove the small talk, especially if it’s about the weather.

We do it in the UK during the war they believed it would encourage people to spend more time outside thus saving coal.

The question is how many people in the modern world appreciate the extra light? We might spend more of it outside in the evenings during holidays which is good in tourist areas but I bet once home they just sit inside as usual. For people like me where light/dark is more important than actual time it makes no difference if you call the hour 8 or 9.

To prove it's pointlessness try this little experiment. Google sunrise/sunset to in towns to the east and west of your time zone. There's about half and hour difference across the UK so it must be huge across American time zones

just goes to show what a group of complete MORONS we have working for us in the US house and senate. They can't even agree on a simple solution for this issue and rid ourselves of the time change. To think many are out voting today for their favorite moron to continue doing nothing.

Put me down 10000% in favor. The long days and lingering sunsets - absolutely love it.

To be sure, in one sense, it is an optical illusion as the days get longer either way as spring and summer draw on. Still, as a boy growing up in Michigan, after the long dreary nights of winter, there was something amazing about it being 10 at night and there was still light in the sky.

Plus, I admit, I am a morning person, so getting up an hour earlier is not such a big deal. So put it all together, and throw in that I associate daylight savings time with the best seasons of the year - I think the year should start on April 1 and end on August 31 and then snap back to April 1 and start again - and I would not miss it for anything.

Daylight savings time? Bring it on!!!

In the late 60s or early 70s the UK changed for one year and the number of road accident fatalities increased massively. When it's dark for that long you need to adjust to allow for people being half asleep because of their circadian rhythm.

Of course, fewer kids walk to school these days thanks to their fat-ass parents driving their obese offspring everywhere, so there's fewer targets for sleeping drivers to run over...

South Africa doesn't have clock changes, except the ANC trying to turn it back to before Jan van Ribbiek arrived with the Europeans...

I know I will catch flack for this. But, how does the sun produce more daylight by turning the clocks ahead? I was raised on a farm. When there were things to do in the fields. You would get your butt out of bed when the sun came up. Regardless of the time. Then go to bed with the chickens. As the saying goes.
Some construction people start to work in the summer months earlier to beat the heat!
Companies that work around the clock wouldn’t have any savings.
I would say use the sun for your clock!

It made sense with old tungsten wire light bulbs that emit 95% of energy in warmth instead of light. With LED or even fluorescent lamps is this pointless and annoying. People who support different summer and winter time like CEST CET should be buttered and rolled in feathers.

We have it here in the UK. The reason for it is because farmers need the light when they have to do their farmer stuff.

Is it utterly ridiculous for the masses? yes, but there is a certain quirkiness to it that I'm use to after so many years!

DST was a great idea... when we were mostly an agrarian society. But in today's modern urban industrialized world, it has mostly lost its meaning. If people in China, which should have 7 time zones, can live with just one time zone, why can't the rest of us bo without thst one-hour semi-annual change.
