Am I going crazy, or was the Spanish word for "umbrella" officially changed sometime within the last 15 years?

I took 3 years of Spanish in high school and while I do recall it being "paragua", I also recall it being "parasol". I even remember my teacher explaining that it's "parasol" FOR SUN, because umbrellas were originally invented in East Asia to protect against the sun. But now when I search for "parasol" in Spanish, nothing comes up in translator. And in search engines it shows me that "parasol" is an English word and the Spanish word is "sombrilla"😲

Is there some kind of Mandela Effect going on, or have Spanish speakers stopped using "parasol"?

The Polish word for umbrella, "parasolka" literally comes from "parasol"

I remember watching Go Diego Go as a kid, there was an episode I think with an umbrella bird so they taught the viewer the Spanish word for umbrella. I tried looking it up but can’t find anything specific about that, but I am PRETTY sure it was Paragua

Well, I'm not familiar with Spanish at all, but I can understand why it would be a 'parasol', 'sol' meaning 'sun', and that's what they were originally used for; to protect oneself from the sun, not the rain.

I've never heard "parasol" used in English until now, and even so that word originated from Spanish. So Spanish language not using "parasol" at all makes no sense at all

I was also in high-school Spanish for 3 years but it's hard to remember that far back. I highly doubt they changed the word tho

In the uk parasol is reserved for those big umbrellas you see sticking out of tables or people lie under on beaches. Umbrella is what you use in the rain. Is it the same in Spain?

I've checked the etymology it's Italian para=protection from, sol = sun
