Why do some people in New York get furious when you throw a gang sign?

You probably threw the sign of a rival gang. Gangs are ultimately organized crime rings. And organized crime is, ultimately, a business. But it's not an industry where violence against competitors is as closely monitored by the law as other industries, so it happens.
