I could write and Essay on this question but for times sake I'll do bullet points because otherwise I'll have bleeding fingers by the time I'm done.
1. Merch of a one-legged Tori gate is beyond insulting because it was inspired by the Sannō Shrine which is a Torrie gate that was half destroyed by the atom bomb in Nagasaki. So they were making money off and image inspired by a national tragedy.
2. They stole concept art multiple Anime 1 for 1
3. used the flags of Japanese historical reenactors and Japanese noble blood lines without permission.
4. They used Chinese subtitles for the Japan trailer.
5. They included a Buddhist shrine they had to remove because it is not allowed to be shown in any kind of art without the permission.
6. Crap gameplay bugs and glitches.
7. Ubisuck game. Nuff said.
8. Attacking people on social media for criticizing the game falsly claiming hatespeach.
9. in multiple youtube videos I saw myself that had 0 racism and we're mostly critical of historical problems they filed take down requests and false copywrite strikes to as many videos as they could.
10. They used multiple items of Chinese furniture art etc. in a game about feudal Japan for game item models etc.
11. They claim all criticism (And they have done this multiple times) coming from Japanese people that are just angry white guys using google translate. (They are not in fact the Japanese AC community is enraged by this behavior.
12. They actively lied about the Idea of who and what Yasukie really was in Japan for DEI points.
13. The guy who wrote the book "African Samuri" which is where they got their idea for Yasuke has not only been completely debunked, but it also accuses Japan started engaging in mass in the Atlantic black slave trade after Yasuke became famous which is just an outright lie.
14. In spite of all the racism towards Japanese in this game they used people being racist as an excuse to slap away all criticism and devs have publicly attacked the gaming community and bribed game journalists to lie about the quality of the game and saying the gamers were racist.
15. They had game devs publicly saying "Japan is a racist country." and while yes there is racism there saying the whole country is racist, is racist against Asians.
16. By Ubisofts own admission the majorty of the team working on it have never made a game before.
17. Yasuke is literal and entire character that is just a racist BBC stereotype for a character whose soundtrack is some weird Japanese hip hop which is another black people stereotype with the hip hop being a "Black person thing."
18. The behavior of Ubisuck and the outrage it caused in Japan in regards to how they handled the criticism got so big the Japanese government got involved.
That's just a lot of the bullet points I know there are more, but these are off the top of my head, and you're notice most of these aren't even about race or racism unless they're being racist towards Japan. In fact, the reason that Japanese government got involved is they were concerned it would cause racist backlash against black people in Japan.
You’re right that is a lot but at the same time assassin’s Creed does a really good job of doing history pieces, especially that what Egyptian one where you can go back in time and ask questions or read about what it was like even in Valhalla, you have some of those features as well
Now, remembering that this is gameplay and also fiction to some extent, it doesn’t have to be totally accurate I guess, but if it’s going to give some of the features like I did for the others then I can understand
Black samurai is a real thing and technically if you look at culture wise, we love other cultures, not to intent to make a mockery of it or anything like that but back in the 70s or 80s a lot of children grew up with anime and a lot of kung fu movies not saying that this is the direct correlation with this, but it definitely has some heavy affection towards others
I've looked into this at length and no Yasuke was never a samurai in fact he was spared when oda Nobunaga was beheaded because he was a servant. Yasuke was bought by Odo from some protestant missionaries because he was fascinated by a black guy because Japan has always been very isolated in general and at that time I think they either still banned foreigners from entering or had just removed the restriction I think it was the latter if I remember right.
Even if the book "Black Samuri" wasn't 99% bullshit it's still clear he wasn't Samuri as well because in the book they claim Yasuke fled with Nobu Nagunaga's head and it never mentioned he killed himself which would mean he wasn't a samurai even by the books own logic because he did not commit seppuku.
Pretty much the entire book has been debunked. Yasuke was a real person, but he was probably more like a servant of a pet. That said If I recall Nobu Naga liked and enjoyed talking with him and did give him some things but as far as we know from records a Katana was never one of them.
Also part of why Japan is so pissed about the historical in accuracies is a tone of these can be debunked as total BS and the cultural appropriation with a google search. The Chinese things in feudal Japan is rude and insensitive to both cultures too.
Japan takes their culture and history very, very seriously and part of why people are so pissed about the historical accuracy in a historical fiction game is because they were pushing the historical accuracy angle HARD in the original promo's and only started backing off when they found error upon error historically Yasuke being the biggest of them all. The other examples I gave like Chinese symbols in a Japanese game is lazy bad research and cultural appropriation. In fact that's one of the other things that's pissing Japanese people off they feel like their culture and history are being used to push American political views.
Honestly, I don’t put it past this person to actually have some type of training or some type of skills and owners or whatever didn’t play some type of favoritism with their servants so it’s not like it couldn’t of happened. Think about this we many different cultures serve different wars during civil rights and other wars back in history and they don’t discover those until now so it’s not I’m common to actually see this happen. Normally in our side is of a lighter complexion, but I understand.
The difference is this period in history is incredibly well documented and too this day we have Odo Nobunaga's Finacial records for what Yusuke was given and that was a house and I small stipend. Neither of those make you Samuri.
Also, at that period in time Japan genuinely was xenophobic this is a culture that for hundreds of years killed every foreigner that landed on their shores for any reason without the emperor's permission which was almost never given. A black Samuri in Japan is like expecting a black noble to be a landed knight in Europe.
Japan was almost frozen in time to some extent because of how cut off they were until America forced them into trading with us at the end of a cannon barrel. Making Yasuke a samurai would have caused an uproar and been incredibly unpopular with everyone not just the Samuri but the people in general in Japan.
There is no evidence of him being a samurai of any kind and the story about him rescuing Odo Nobunaga's head has been disproven also again if he was Samurai, he would have committed Seppuku after failing Odo. Yasuke was a real person and including him never would have been a problem IF they didn't push as hard as they could to pass it off as a fact when there is 0 evidence of the claim that he was a Samurai also just because you have a weapon and know how to fight still doesn't make you a samurai either you could be a retainer but a samurai is not the same thing.
The average guy in a medieval military wasn't a knight. It was peasants with sickles and sharp sticks. All they had to do was include Yasuke in a way that wouldn't be historical bullshit or even just say yea this is made up but we admit that.
I think very few people would have cared that Yasuke was in the game if they didn't double down over and over that Yasuke was a samurai when there is no evidence and in fact historical standards make it even more unlikely.
This is why I said people did things in secret and a lot of things were not documented the same way that it would be and of course, like on paper in certain situations, they’re not going to say everything you just kinda have to be there. Somebody took pity and think about it someone also Would’ve most likely killed him if they knew the real truth or some stuff like that we all know the stories I do believe you that these are big things to expect from a culture that is unlikely to do so. I just also choose to believe there is a different side too. I would understand if he was beheaded for a noble cause but at the same time you know, I don’t think he was out there defenseless either and none of those things make you a samurai, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t learn. And yet again this is still a video game fantasy.
It’s not unheard of a lot of people’s culture. Families have been annihilated destroyed just to protect them or they were purposely being erased from history.
I'm aware in fact there are a ton of cases of records in Asia being deliberately destroyed for various reasons and I suppose that it is possible the simplest answer and therefor the most likely with all this context is he was likely a personal servant Odo was fond of because based on what we know they seemed to have spent a lot of time talking together as friends or at least someone for Odo to talk to. He was also a slave when he came to Japan and Japan did have some forms of slavery, but it wouldn't have operated the same way. The Japanese wouldn't have seen him as a slave BECAUSE he was black. I guess it's possible he might have had some minor training and become a bodyguard but that would be the absolute most if we're being realistic.
They would have seen him as a slave because when he was brought to Japan that's exactly what he was. The idea that Japan was a major player in the Atlantic slave trade is an outright ugly lie, but they did have some forms of slavery like indentured servitude and serfdom. I think certain criminals could also be enslaved as punishment. Essentially, they would have viewed him with the same status he had when he arrived on their shores. Odo bought him so it's not even clear if he was ever even freed like I said he might have basically been a pet.
Yeah, all I’m saying it could be possible. But you’re right it’s almost like the pirate queen who took over after she basically beheaded her husband so it’s not unheard of especially if it’s being brought up till now but you’re right. I did some research and didn’t doubt you I justlike the fantasy of it.
There are a few issues, but the biggest is that it doesn't look like a fun game.
The game purports itself to be historically immersive, but isn't. This wouldn't be an issue if the game never claimed to be historically accurate.
Specifically, a character named "Yasuke" was revealed to be a complete fabrication based on fraudulent academic documentation and falsified research. Again, this wouldn't be a big deal if the game hadn't been represented as a historically accurate statement piece.
The combat is boring
the parkour mechanics are clunky.
The graphics are... fine... but not really where you'd hope a game like that would be in this day and age.
Truth be told, none of that stuff would matter to me if the game looked fun to play.
I know that I really enjoyed The Last of Us 2, even though that was surrounded by controversy. I enjoyed it because it was a fun, polished game to play. AC Shadows doesn't give that vibe at all.
The bros were mad that they could only choose between an Asian woman or a black man, no more white guys. Screaming “DEI is ruining video games!” And all that jazz
- They tried to argue it was mostly historically accurate, which it wasn't at all about Japan and their culture, so a lot of people from Japan felt disrespected.
- The game is buggy, awkward, and looks rushed in some areas.
- Ubisoft reacted terribly to the criticism over this by doubling down and tried hiding said criticism.
