Should parents penalize their children for defending themselves?

Question

Growing up I was told to stay out of trouble more than I was ever told to defend myself, I learned to defend myself on my own, I also got into a lot of trouble growing up but I believe that ends with me, I want my children to defend themselves even if it gets them suspended or expelled, if it's not their fault I wouldn't hold them accountable for them defending themselves because I believe that really effects them mentally, to grow up with a bully or something, id rather they feel comfortable knowing they can defend themselves rather then be scared of their parents and let themselves get bullied or whatnot, id imagine there would have to be rules tho.

Kids need to learn to fight back if nothing is being done.
that’s how we taught our son…

my son 15 now… he just called me and told me he got into trouble in Spanish class. He and his friend was being “disrespectful” to the teacher.
she kept them behind and spoke to them.
my son went to the next class… then returned to his Spanish teacher… told her that he respects her and was not laughing at her.
I was shock to see a HS kid goes back to his teacher to explain to her…

my point is… when kids are raised to feel shame and not able to stand up for themselves (the Spanish teacher) .. they will become weak.
my son on the other hand…. was taught to stand up for himself at the same time, able to see other’s perspective.
I was shock to see he had the courage to return to his teacher to tell her to not feel bad and that he was laughing at his friend and not at her.

no and i think the parents should get involved if the school won't stop that bullshit

after a certain point i'd slap the shit out of whoever was bullying my kid or i'd threaten them. idc if police get involved bc bullying is no joke. i went through it, got in fights, school did nothing, and my parents got mad at me too bc it made them look bad. it only stopped bc i moved and changed schools.

Fortunately I was trusted by my parents to do what was right. All the bullying was put down at a very early age, and I had few problems growing up.

Of course not. Everybody should teach their children to respond to violence with violence. Violence is the only language a bully understands.

I agree with you; kids should not be penalized for defending themselves. Whether that be physically or verbally. This creates kids that are able to argue properly in a healthy, respectful way. They can learn to problem solve, express their opinions clearly, listen, and find common ground with others and defend themselves if all else fails or if it’s ever needed.

My parents taught us. Someone starts with you finish it. But if i find out you started it, you gonna get a foot up the butt.

But in my case i had a very tough big brother who people feared, an extremely large scary looking pops, and a very protective friends circle, so i actually never had a fight in my life.
