my grandma suffers from dementia, it makes me sad sometimes
Well at the begining it's ok they just forget some stuff then they become more dangerous opening the gas and letting it flow, throwing stuff in the trash or outside without any reasons, leaving their underwear everywhere, taking off their clothes for no reasons (even outside because they have no sense of shame / or what's acceptable or not anymore). Then they begin to throw fit cause they don't wanna eat or do something, forget to take a bath, don't sleep, have crazy sleep like sleeping all day but not on night, screaming in the night, acting like a child in the middle of the night / screaming then going back to sleep, thinking they need to go to work in the middle of the night and going outside alone at 2 am (they're unable to take a shower alone not remember how it's done but remember how to open the gas or turn the key and open the door, they're even able to search the key if you hide ir and use it to open the door and if they can't do something successfully they throw tantrum, scream then forget it if you show them a candy or cat or something).
At the end (which take usually 6 /8 years to go to the really worse state) theyre unable to do anything expect breathing. They sit all day all sleepy then scream like banshee if they don't take special medicament or walk in circle mumbling.
As by my personal experience the person in my family that had it was able to remember me until nearly the last day, it's only on the last day she couldn't recognize me but if not she recognized me instantly which really warmed my heart cause on top of everything I don't think I could have handled it if she couldn't remember me.
So people with dementia can definitely remember you until nearly the last day (even under medicament), in my experience she forgot absolutely everything except me and her husband and she never was violent with me, she was always very calm (which wasn't the case with others people).
My only advice is to see her as much as you can especially since it's just the begiing because once she Start to really decline (which will be easy to see as when they begin to really decline they age 20 years in a fews days / weeks then it's when it ll be really difficult and you'll start to not recognize her anymore).
In the end I couldn't recognize her at all and I was able to mourn her way before she died since she really was not here anymore (her mind, only stayed her body and she looked so different from before she definitely was not the same person anymore).
Also don't change your looks, hair length / color, ways to dress always stay the same so she can easily remember you. They also remember really old stuff from when they were young but don't remember recent stuff.
Thanks 🙏
My mother suffered with dementia for years. It got worse over the years. Sadly she passed away last year.
I've had my share of dementia patients working as a paramedic. Some were OK, just the memory issues. Still pleasant people, but saddening when I see them try hard to remember something then get too tired and give up. Others were stuck in a loop of being extremely nasty people. I would be too honestly, if I was stuck in a nursing home. Those are seriously depressing places with a lot of staff who have no business touching patients. Diseases spread like wildfire in those places too, hence the covid issues. The "good" ones cost a fortune and most people can't afford them.
@liaraven oh hell yeah i had to work in the health industry once - and I'm glad I realised it wasn't for me. It's so much harder than it looks and I really feel for their struggles and it's very exhausting as a job to give my 100 percent every shift so a fair while or years ago I briefly did the job once and then I felt I had to resign as I just didn't have the skills the job needed.
You know - I was just a small fish in pond trying to learn the basics even and yeah I felt burn out after months
@liaraven I always was attentive however some folks are just better skilled in life to be, say, nurses, doctors, minders, carers, observers , and obviously I think I'm just someone fit for other jobs in life like 👔 a suit and tie guy is me, or I'm a guy who's maybe a blue collar or white collar professional outside the health circle ⭕

Give her large serving of yogurt that contains live probiotic cultures everyday, and a live culture supplement of Lactobacillus Reuteri if you cannot find yogurt that contains Lactobacillus Reuteri. Lots of fatty fish but watch out for bones, walnuts , cranberries, nuts and dark berries if she can eat those safely or put them in a smoothie. All this stuff is a safe and natural way to help fight the brain inflammation that causes dementia. The are also some herbs recommended by traditional Chinese medicine but I don't know which ones.
It gets progressively worse. My former scoutmaster has advanced stages of it. He doesn't remember me. It takes a devastating toll on the person and will eventually lead to death. I am sorry you are facing this. Enjoy your time with her while you can.
I know somebody from the gym that has early onset Alzheimer's disease. I have known this guy for a long time. I coached his kids in soccer. One day I told him about getting a hip replacement and he told me that he had Alzheimer's disease. I though he was kidding but he was not. He tells me he gets lost in his neighborhood at night,. He cannot drive anymore. His wife drives him to the gym. He is definitely not the same guy. I hardly ever see him anymore.
My mom, it’s gotten worse within the last two years. My mom gets stuck in loops with conversations and she is not self sufficient anymore. Lately her anxiety has been rough as well she’s started to pick at her skin on her body.
I'm so sorry, The people I knew with dementia have passed. It depends on how severe and it's not the same for everyone. my brothers in laws forgot who anyone was, started ingesting cleaning supplies, it was bad. Be strong, and be there for her if you can, she may not be able to show her appreciation or know what you did or who you are? But, what you did mattered. Prey, there is someone there for you when you get there, hopefully you won't.
I know a couple. It must be horrible.
I live in the country with a lot of dementia patients here, and yeah it’s terrible. Imagine your mind stuck in the any moment and forget everything you have recently
Get him some ear phones and music from his era, and tumeric is suppose to help with plaque build up on the brain , i knew 4 diffrent people that had it they all passed away
Difficult, challenging, tiring, frustrating.
Yeah my grandma things aren't great we've had the same conversations for years now over her arm that she thinks was just recently broken
I don't know him personally but, Joe Biden's had it for YEARS!!
My mum has Lewy Body Dementia. Relatively early still but it's difficult. I'm her primary carer.
Yes. It's very rough and unfortunately only gets worse. Enjoy the good days, don't hold the bad days against them. Best advice I can give.
My grandfather had Alzheimer's and so did his father. It can be a struggle, but you do what you can.
My dad had a stroke and is like a child now, people have told me it's like dementia. Not easy.
But stroke patients have at least a chance for improvement, dementia patients do not.
Old people turn into children or babies because of this illness.
