Why do deers stare at you on rhe rd?

Has anyone wonder why animals will just stay on the rd as you drive closer to it? Let's play chicken anyone.

Deer, among other wildlife have eyes that are optimized for low light conditions.

Like you, their pupils are fully dilated to absorb as much light as possible. When a car comes across, they freeze in a position until their eyes have adapted to the change in light conditions. That will take a few seconds for their pupils to adapt to bright light.

During those few seconds, deer are practically frozen in their position and that gives the impression that they are motionless as if they were scared by the sudden brightness of headlights.

This disorientation and inability to perceive their surroundings can trigger a "freeze" response.

So the instinctual reaction to danger is fight/flight/freeze/fawn. One was clearly named after deer, but deer also obviously have a “freeze” reaction when they’re certain their death is imminent.
