Eskimos have dozens of words for snow but here we have 26 words/phrases for rain, ( by the looks of things most have English equivalents)
Not many people like rain, but what's the worst type of rain?

I think it's mizzly rain, the stuff that makes you wet. It doesn't look like proper rain and it doesn't run off your clothes it just sticks to you. And anything blowing in the air sticks to you, particularly sand. Normal rain isn't nice but at least it cleans you not make you more dirty.

welp... here in Texas we generally are happy to see most types of precipitation as it's quite hot most of the year and a good rain (especially if it stays overcast) can drop that temp from over 100f down into the 80s (even if it does make things a bit like a sauna).
The kind I love is the thunderstorm with little wind. That 3 phase pop of lightning (dim, FLASHBULB, dim) followed closely by the growl that bursts into a deafening clap, with background growls promising even more pyrotechnics. Awesome for sleeping.
The bad ones are with high winds, possibly tornadic, and bringing hail with it from pea sized to grapefruit... ice balls that destroy rooves and vehicles, winds that knock down trees and sever power lines for tons of people... yeah, those are scary bad.

I'd say two types. Very fine rain, but that will last a day long and eventually gets you wet. I'm not sure if it's the rain in itself, or just the air loaded with fine particles. You practically breathe it in all day long. The second is rain with strong wind, probably what you describe as horizontal.

One day it started raining, and it didn't quit for four months. We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin' rain... and big ol' fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath. Shoot, it even rained at night...

In Thailand, where I currently live, the minsoonal rains are mostly torrential (usually lasting 30-60 mins !) which I prefer.

Back in my homecity Auckland, the sub-tropical rains are torrential too, even in the mild northern-NZ winters !

The worst, in my experience anyway, were the drizzly rains in London, especially during the long (so verrry long !) British winters.

Being from Ireland , we get a lot of the mizzly/drizzly rain and it is exactly as you say - You are moving from point A to point B through what cannot really be perceived as significant rain yet how come on arrival at point B , you are soaking wet.

To me, the worst kind rain, or rather the worst kind of weather, is at a temperature between 0 and 5°C (a little above freezing point) any rain with wind ! In those conditions, sure that heavier the rain, and harder the wind, the worse the situation gets.

I was at one of these outdoor parties that high school kids have. I like to climb trees when I get drunk. I found a nice big oak tree and climbed it to get a good view of what was going on. When it is raining buckets. That’s really bad when in the car as you can’t see and the one behind you can’t see. Horizontal rain is arguably worse but with that you get a warning as that is a very bad storm that has been forecast and on the news before it hit usually so you can just avoid it.

@AngryCarl2 I have operated in the Canadian arctic quite often... and yes it is offensive to northern aboriginals. It is for many equivalent to the N word down south. A Canadian football team from Edmonton recently changed their name because of this. There is nothing wrong with demonstrating a bit of understanding and empathy.
