We've got a major severe storm coming our way today. They are calling for hail, heavy rain, severe strong winds and tornadoes. My area is on the 3 to 4 out of 5 on the danger meter. I have had my fair share of storms over the years like hurricanes, ice storms, snow storms and severe thunderstorms. How about you?
2 moThis last ice storm that went through the southeast was the worst I’ve experienced. The actual storm was no big deal, it’s what happened after that made it so terrible. The entire neighborhood lost power for days, we stayed with my grandparents who also didn’t have power but had a working fireplace. It was our main source of heat and any kind of cooking. For 3 days we stayed there, and while we experienced the immense kindness of my grandparents neighbors and my family’s friends who came to see us and check on us (ie letting us use their gas stove, donating firewood we could use, cutting up the fallen tree that had trapped our car on the road in that cul-de-sac, etc) before we moved on to a hotel, which we couldn’t do in the first 3 days because they were all full up, one of the few places with reliable power thanks to their back up generators. Our house got power back on day 4, but my grandparents didn’t so they stayed with us for another 10 days until their power came back. That was honestly the worst storm I’ve experienced just because of how many days I had to spend focusing solely on my own survival

Ugh I remember that ice storm, I was out of work for almost two weeks because of it and the snow storm that followed behind it. Growing up I remember an ice storm we had that caused us to lose power so we cooked dinner on our wood stove which was Brunswick stew and grilled cheese sandwich. We filled up tidy cat buckets before the storm so that if we lost power could still use the bathroom. Plus we had candle lanterns for light.

We just lived off of a really bland bean and rice “stew” my grandma made. I hate beans 🤢

2 moI wasn't in town when it happened but a month or so ago there was wind gusts of up to 193 km/h (118m/h). Trees were down, powerlines down, trampolines flew away, streets flooded, roads and businesses closed, 30k properties lost power including one of my works stores which had no power for 3 days.
Luckily the only damage to my house was an old phone line that came down, and a few fronds from my pineapple palm tree, not a big deal just a pain in the ass to dispose of.10 Reply

I was on a fishing boat in a hurricane that was supposed to miss us one time but did not in fact miss.. 60+ knot winds for 2 days running back and forth accross the same 1/2 a mile in this little cove to keep from rolling the boat over rolling the dice whenever we changed directions.. That was likely the most potential for death.. I remember a snow storm one time where it snowed so much and so heavy so fast and there was zero wind. The ocean looked flat and white like a soccer field as if you could walk on it because the snow was piling on top of itself faster then it was melting. For almost 20 mins I thought I had died and gone to heaven everything was just pillowy white and visability was so low it was as though we were in the clouds..

2 moI was in Australia once, working on a project with a company outside Brisbane. One late afternoon, the sky turned green, the wind picked up and torrents of rain came down on the small building we were in. It lasted about an hour. The walls of the building shook and we were afraid that the roof would blow off. We all huddled in a interior room until it was over. Then, we went outside and saw what the storm had left. Broken trees, debris everywhere.
That was the scariest I've ever been. Walking outside in the middle of a typhoon in Taiwan, which I stupidly did a few years later, wasn't as bad.

2 moMeh, hard to choose at this point. I've been through multiple hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning storms on an exposed mountain ridge, and 3 foot blizzards with 60 mph winds, heavy rain storms with flash flooding, and hail. All of it is pretty cool to witness.
11 Reply We had strong winds the other day, but I'm sure nothing like the storm for you today.
We've had storms in the past, but they've not caused any damage to my property, and they've not caused me much of a problem.
I hope the storm doesn't disrupt your day too much, and it passes away without causing any damage.

Anyway, the storm was actually supposed to miss us and go to another city, but it made a surprised turn at the last minute. My mom and I were watching a movie. All of sudden, the power snapped off. We heard the wind and heard rain. We ran for the hallway to be away from windows. It felt like an eternity, but the worst of it was over in minutes.

2 moHurricane Sandy. Lived my entire life in and Brooklyn and had never been through anything like that. What's stuck with me the most is how the subway tunnels flooded. It was eerie for me

Howard beach/jamica/jfk airport areas were the worse. So many lost their homes. Gas stations out of fuels. Tracks couldn't come in to deliver gas.

It was pretty crazy. We are used to snow. We get around 100 inches per winter. That is just a lot all at one time. Everyone was just stuck. We basically didn't have Christmas like normal where lots of out of town family comes to stay.
It was just our family, which was nice, to be honest.

2 moI want to say it was Hurricane Floyd in 1999 because I remember a tree hitting my grandmother's home which was scary.

That's good that you haven't experienced that. It's such a scary thing to go through.
2 moWe had a hail storm a few years back. Wrote off our car. Wrote off a few thousand cars in the city. Not a great time to be negotiating to source a replacement... movement on price was impossible, but we at least secured one in 2 weeks when some were waiting 6-12 months, or travelling to other cities to purchase sooner.

I lived a mile from the beach in Redondo Beach, CA. The windows of our house were almost blown out a couple times, once in the early 80's and again in 1988. The storm in the early 80's blew a bunch of trees down and knocked down power lines all over town.
