But is it? Have you ever been in the eye of a hurricane and what's it really like?

I've lived in Sarasota Florida all my life and have seen many a hurricane come through the area, but this is the first ever to hit us dead on. My family and I are today in Jacksonville staying with cousins and only the 5th time that I can recall leaving the immediate area for a storm. Our home is far enough inland that I am sure it will be ok however not risking our lives or kids lives for this storm.
I did stay for a cat 2 storm once that made landfall south of us, but close enough that yes in the eye it was totally calm for a short period of time.
@katiesmuff I am in Louisiana and like you have seen my share of hurricanes. Stay safe and I will add you to the list of prayers for the people there.
@nawtee_me Thank you so much! Will be interesting to get back home over the weekend or early next week and see what things are like. Like I said not so worried about our home other then odds are we will lose our screened patio screen with is huge. Much more worried about my workplace which is old long established Restaurant/bar located on the south end of Siesta Key basically right on the water. Several years ago we got hit hard and spent almost 2 months getting everything cleaned up and repaired. This really worries me and wondering about our employee's. It is a solid building and since that last event we have installed hurricane shutters. We shut down after business Saturday night and began preparations on Sunday and Monday. We left town Monday evening before the heavy traffic. Getting back will be a pain in the ass for sure.
I assume you were in the middle of Katrina? I remember the death and destruction that horrible storm did to you folks on the northern golf coast. Thank you again for your prayers.
@nawtee_me Well if you love seafood and the best clam chowder ever I would love to see you join us.
@nawtee_me Well I am back home and we had no damage to our home or property. The restaurant is another story. We had some building damage but the killer was 3 ft of water though the place which is requiring replacement of some of the bar coolers and freezers. We have begun the cleaning which will take several days at the bar and dining room. The kitchen from the salt water all of the ovens and fryers will be replaced along with coolers and freezers. All open food or product is being disposed of including everything that was in our walk in coolers and freezers. Our outside Tiki area doesn't even exist at the moment. We figure we won't reopen until mid Nov.
I lived and grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and survived many Hurricanes. The first one I was aware of was Donna. I have seen the pines in my front yard bend over and touch the ground at the tip. The day Donna came over us we had no school and were tempted to go out when the storm had passed I remember my Dad telling my brother and I not to go outside when the wind stopped because it was coming back. And it did. a brief period say 30 minutes and Hello. I can remember the St Johns River at flood stage and riding a school bus over a wooden bridge with the water 3 ft below the roadbed. because sometime they did not cancel school. We all had civil defense rations from the bomb drill because of the Cuban missile crisis.
Plenty of Birds in the eye
@katiesmuff I am glad you and your home made it through and am sorry about the restaurant. Make a reservation for me in November or when you open. I am from Louisiana so I love seafood. Over here though it is more about Gumbo instead of Clam Chowder so I will be looking forward to expanding my taste buds.
How many employees do you have? Did they make it through as well?
@nawtee_me Currently 44 and we have them all working with us on the clean up and rebuilding which is keeping paycheck coming to them. Thank you and appreciate the concern.
@katiesmuff Hey Katie, you are a blessing to your employees. I have known companies to lay their employees off but not many put them to work until business was back to normal. You must have more than just a restaurant with 44 employees? Is there anything I can do?
@nawtee_me We have very good insurance which cost us dearly, but looks pretty damn good right at the moment. Other than physical damage we have a loss of revenue clause.
@katiesmuff hey, just checking to see how things are going? I wanted to ask if there was anything that I could bring for the people in the area? Water? Toilet paper? Is there anything that is hard to get at the moment?
Yes, about 1 month ago. I was right there, in the eye of the biggest typhoon to hit Shanghai in 80 years.
The before and after the eye of the typhoon approached my home were very noisy, windy and scary, then I felt like it stopped and looked the typhoon tracker only to find out, I was right in the middle of it. When I thought it stopped was the time when it was right on top of me.
I was in Florida many years ago when a category 2 hurricane passed over where I was staying. It's weird. The high winds stop as the eyewall passes, and you can see clear blue sky. That lasts several minutes until the other side of the eyewall arrives and the winds return... in the opposite direction. Remember that winds circulate anti-clockwise around the eye.
Yes. During Hurricane Belle in August 1976, the eye of the storm came over my house around midnight or so. I was 13. I went outside and it was unbelievably quiet. I went to be shortly after that. In the morning, I rode my bike around the neighborhood to see what had happened. One neighbor, 3 house away, had a large tree come down in their yard.

They say that Milton if there were a category 6 it would have become one. Using the same criteria that changes it from 1to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, and 4 to 5 then it would have changed from 5 to 6 as well.
The eye of the storm is small and tight. I have only been through one eye and it is calm and lighter that in the storm itself. I don’t remember blue sky but the calm, yes…. Then the darkness and the wind and rain started up again. It is strange and eerie in the eye.
The very dead center of all hurricanes should be 0 mph winds and feel really calm though the sky would be surrounded by dark clouds.
The same reason why a coin placed on top of your head wouldn’t fall off after you spin really fast and remaining perfectly level.
Every day on GAG during a political discussion... No... wait, Purple, that isn't what you meant?
Have had some large Pacific storms blow in here in CA, and have seen that effect when we are in the center of a swirling air mass. Very Surreal.
Yeah. Hurricaine Gloria in 1985. That was amazing for 45 min until shit got real again! 10/10 highly recommend!
I never had the eye of the storm go over me. I was in hurricane Gloria back in 1985 which was a category 4 hurricane
@exitseven we had a lot of damage at my parents house from the storm
Yes I live in Florida and have my whole life I have been through more hurricanes than I can remember. The eye is like they say but you don't notice it because time goes by so fast.
Like I tell everyone It's not the Hurricane that is Bad. It's the 3 plus weeks after with no power or water. No AC and tons of Mosquitos. That's what is bad. That's when you wish you were still in the Hurricane
I have, it is peaceful and quiet, there's not even wind, it's like a normal beautiful day
Have been in the eye of several hurricanes. As you described, very quiet, virtually no wind or rain. Pleasant, but doesn’t last long.
@purplepoppy Thank you for the Like
No, but you can watch NOAA fly into it online.
That’s so cool, I wish I could ride along with them
not really, that is why I live where the air hurts my face.
Snowstorms, blizzards, a tornado or two, but nothing like that.
There are no hurricanes here, nor tsunami or earthquakes. Not even giant spiders.
I am always close to a croissant 🤤:
Exactement, oui
Yes but I understand lots of great food! 😊
@katiesmuff
This is what our ministry of turism and culture sells. But, in my very partial opinion, they have a point lol
@Maybe_Maybe_not doublecheck your data about "ouragans" hitting France and earthquakes...
@SueShe It's not about data really, what we can have is nowhere near what a country like US can experience, scales matter !
Hehe
Yeah when I was a kid we had a hurricane here on Long Island and it was calm for a short moment and then it continued again, took down a big tree in the yard
Gloria in 85?
@DrPepper12 Yeah that’s the one
one, yes... just not as eventful as this one
During Hurricane Gloria in 1985 i can remember being outside while the eye passed over me. It was really quiet and still.
No. But I've heard of the eye of the storm by Killswitch Engage
Yes, hurricane Andrew back in 1992 was the worst hurricane ever in Florida
Never in that level of a storm.
No and no plans to do so either
Yes, but eventually we broke up.
No but I’d love to experience it
Not yet
