Why is the Empire State Bldg taller than One World Trade Center?

Look at the picture, looking south over Manhattan, New York City.. One World Trade Center is more than 500 feet (160 m) taller than the Empire State Bldg, but the Empire State Bldg looks much taller.

This picture is taken from the top of Rockefeller Center (Top of the Rock), which is only 849 feet (249 m) tall. Both the Empire State Bldg and One World Trade Center should be taller in the picture, but they're not.

Is this picture fake?

Can it be explained?

Totally ridiculous answer... The earth is flat and this perspective proves it.

• he premise of your question is incorrect; the New World Trade Center, specifically One World Trade Center, is actually taller than the Empire State Building. While the Empire State Building held the title of the tallest building in the city for many years, One World Trade Center, at 1,776 feet, is the current tallest building in New York City and surpassed the Empire State Building's height upon its completion in 2014.

Is it because WTC1 is further away from the viewer? My experience has been that things in the distance tend to look smaller.

ESB is about 70 feet above sea level, WTC is about 10. That, plus the curvature of the Earth, and the height of the camera in relation to the other buildings accounts for the seeming illusion.

Fun fact: on the verazzano bridge, due to Earth's curvature, the tops of the towers are 1⅝ inches farther apart than at the base.
