Tomorrow is the 50 year anniversary of one of the greatest ship disasters in the history of the Great Lakes.

I like the way they added the radio announcer to this version of the song and I find the underwater footage haunting.

I honestly don't remember the news of the Edmund Fitzgerald but I definitely remember the song. It was a major hit in 1976,

Gordon Lightfoot was a great songwriter and this may have been his best. The dirge-like melody has a nautical feel. The haunting lyrics have an epic, almost mythical, quality. What's interesting is, there is no chorus or bridge.

I wasn't that into folk music at that point in my life. At 22 years old, I was heavily into rock. But I remember liking this song, as well as Carefree Highway and If You Could Read My Mind.

I’m from Michigan. I know the song and the story well. I have family who knows people who lost people on the Edmund Fitzgerald. The semi centennial remembrance might bring the spotlight back to one of the most mysterious wrecks on Lake Superior, while recent discoveries ignited a debate about what actually happened. There is an interesting theory and i can’t help but wonder if this was known all along and swept under the rug to protect the financial interests of the fat cats who had the most to lose.

Gosh I wasn't even born yet! My understanding it isn't necessarily the worst Great Lakes shipwreck as hundreds sunk long before this one with many more lives lost, this is just the most recent disaster. All would be considered tragic with any loss of life.

The Edmund Fitzgerald sinking was famous because of its mystery, not its tragedy. The ship had reported rough weather but no calamity only a few minutes before it sank. Not a single “mayday” was called before it went down. There have been investigative dives meant to answer the prominent questions surrounding the ship’s sudden disappearance and they only came up with a viable theory recently.

I think this was Gordon Lightfoot's greatest song because it told a real and very sad story in haunting fashion! Everyone my age remembers the wreck because of the song.

had been a lot of marinetime disasters in the great lakes before that ship sunk , many lives have been lost in those lakes over the years , there was a really bad storm around late 1800's or early 1900's that sunk a whole pile of ships in a few days , it also occurred in the late fall

I was about 9 y/o at the time. I wasn't a news-watcher back then so I don't remember it. I like the song though. I haven't watched the video above so I don't know if it's the same one I saw years ago. In the one I saw, they had relatives on a boat above the wreck and divers were going to place a new bell on the wreck and bring the old one up. Just as it broke the surface it started ringing. That really choked me up.

Nov.10,1975 marked the Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior near Whitefish Bay. Twenty-nine brave crewmen ended up in Davy Jones' Locker, where they found the bras and panties of the broads who threw them at Davy Jones at Monkees' concerts.
