Why do I feel I belong in 18th–19th century Europe instead of today?

I don't know if I'm too influenced by the novels I read, but I always want to live in Victorian England, Tsarist Russia, or Revolutionary France. Am I the only one who wants to live in those times? Aristocracy, balls, waltzes, nobility and titles, castles and palaces—of course, there's also the side of poverty, but even that appeals to me… Wouldn't it be wonderful to be in the places described in the novels of Chekhov, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, or Dickens, Stevenson, the Brontë Sisters, or Hugo, Verne, Balzac, to breathe that air? Am I too much of a dreamer? Are you happy with this era? If time travel were possible, to which time or century would you want to return?

The novels don't bring up the part about having your teeth rotting out and having them pulled without anesthesia. They don't bring up the part about going blind from cataracts or glaucoma that are easily treatable today. Even if you happened to be the tiny percentage of people who were nobility, you'd still have to deal with those kind of things.

Are you a modern day Don Quixote? You could hop on your horse and save damsels in distress, and even bring along a squire. Or would you rather be a Connecticut Yankee?

If I time traveled to the past, they'd probably burn me as a witch because I knew too much. I'd probably try to make electricity and get burned at the stake for it.

Actually, the aristocracy and balls is why I quit reading War and Peace very early. I just thought "This is about a bunch of snobs" and stopped reading.

You’re romanticizing a time that you don’t belong in. Victorian england was overrun with death from illnesses we now consider curable. And women so admired the way tuberculosis made one look that it inspired their make up, not to mention anyone wearing the incredibly expensive but beautifully popular emerald green fabric was slowly dying of arsenic poisoning because that’s what was used to make that color. There were insanely strict gender roles for men and women socially, and maybe that appeals to you, but would shit in your drinking water appeal to you? Because unless you were very rich, you had the same drinking water as everyone else, which was also where the waste was dumped. Not to mention Tsarist Russia had issues with starvation and treason in its final years because of a drought they couldn’t fix. It’s no wonder they became communist when not even their soldiers could get fed properly. Lots of backstabbing and bus-throwing-under if it meant a rise to power.

And I don't know about you, but I like living with air conditioning. I would hate to live in a time where it didn’t exist and I would have to stick hot coals under my mattress to keep warm in winter, and just sweat everything off in summer

You probably have developed a false impression of what the era was like, due to not having lived through those times. I think it's quite common for people to become weary of modern technology and yearn for simpler times, but would you really want your life expectancy cut in half?
