Have you ever used a word that's not a very big word in the presence of an educated person and they didn't know what it meant?

And you thought to yourself. "How does someone have an education degree and not know such a simple word?"

I'm not trying to sound judgmental I just don't know how someone lives 30+ years and has never heard this word. The word is "depravity". I said that word and they asked me what it meant. And I thought they were messing with me, like it was sarcasm. But he was serious. And I told him and then tried to change the subject. So as not to make things awkward.

I mean I suppose it's possible that he's just never came across that word in his life.🤷‍♂️ what do you think?

I don't think it happened to me, only in the case of formal terms. About your case though, I would differentiate a person not knowing the term from a person not familiar with the notion conveyed by the term. The latter case is much more intriguing to me, the former not really

Agreed, I think I said "depth of depravity" a lot of times you can discern the meaning on a word just by context that was used. He flat out said he didn't know what it meant. And like I say, it's just weird because it's not an obscure word, I don't think so anyhow.

Not an obscure word to me, but also not a word I would use or see often. This is mostly a word I would hear in opinionated expressions like Western depravity, something along those lines.

It's tough to talk about how plausible it is because it's a foreign word for me. When I translate it, it goes two ways, either it is meant as perversion which would be quite a rare one for me, or it is meant as decadence which looks more casual to me.

People’s vocabularies grow based on what they read, watch, and talk about. You knowing “depravity” just means you read more diverse stuff. Low-key flex, honestly. Kinda hot when someone drops precise words too 😌📚
