What do you think is the hardest way for a parent to lose a child?

I used to work with a woman and her daughter died by suicide a little over 20 years ago.

I remember one day at work she said if her daughter was still alive it would be her 40th birthday today. She actually went home early that day and said she felt too upset to be at work.

I thought it was really sad seeing my coworker like that. It must be very hard knowing that the person you gave birth to hated their life so much they rather be dead.

I assume its when it was genuinely your fault. Imagine for example that you and your child had a fight and then you find out a day later they committed suicide. Or those classic "left the baby in the car to long" scenarios, not paying attention and the child ran into traffic, etc. Something you will now have to life with for the rest of your life.

That is how my middle step-son died on Friday the 13th of June 2008. He was 25. So, every year on that date and on his birthday, I have to be a bit more sensitive and forgiving of my wife.
