The loss of any person close to us. Not all parents form close bonds with their children. Often, people who are total strangers but manage to get close to us can be closer to us than family. Additionally, there are more or less random events whose consequences can be difficult to accept and cope with.

Losing a spouse, especially young. I mean, it sucks- and I speak from experience, here- but you expect to outlive your parents.
