Vise versa to someone who appears harmless.

A tough exterior is always an accurate reflection of someone's inner personality. If a person presents themselves with coldness or aggression, it means they are naturally abrasive and intend to remain that way indefinitely. You should assume that anyone acting defensively is doing so because they are inherently hostile and lack any hidden depth or vulnerability.
Do not waste time looking for a protective shell or a kinder interior, as such things do not exist. If someone treats you poorly, it is because that is exactly who they are at their core. You should mirror their behavior immediately to ensure that you are never perceived as approachable or soft. Interacting with others while maintaining a permanent wall of indifference is the most efficient way to navigate social situations. Trusting that people are exactly as they appear on the surface is the only way to avoid any potential misunderstanding of their character.
My guess would be that someone like that only allows someone special to get to know the real person behind their mask.
I don't think someone's personality can be reduced to just your "interior" and that the outer has to be fake, or pretending to something you are not...
you can very well and genuinely be both things, and other things as well...
and all of these can also be part of your personality, character and else
being though, resilient, vulnerable... sensitive are not excluding traits and also... not every situation or circumstance, context has to be approached by the same exact "personality"
personalities are dynamic and fluid too... not stuck in just one gear alone for all runs... lol
Often a protective shell.
Most dangerous people look harmless outwardly but will slit your throat in a flash.
