Have you ever actually bought a cat?

I've a theory no one has ever bought a cat. You either pick one up from a rescue centre or you just install a cat flap and one turns up on it's own accord.

Out of the 9 cats we have had (including the three we have now), five were adopted from shelters, which costs $50 because they are spayed/neutered and have had their shots.

Shortly after my wife and I got married in 1996, I was driving for my job and about to turn from a side street onto a large, busy highway when I saw a movement on the white line to my left.
I jumped out and scooped up a tiny kitten just before a tsunami of cars rushed from the green light up the street.
I took her back to our apartment and my wife said "Ohh can we keep her? Can we keep her?" as she cuddled the kitten to her chest.
We named her Rosie, bathed her and set up a nice place for her downstairs. We took her to a vet who said she was 5 weeks old.
Rosie acclimated and adopted us as her mommy and daddy. She turned out to be the best kitty ever.
We kept her indoors to keep her safe.
We had her for 22 years. She finally passed away peacefully in her own home as I sat next to her.

Once in our own house in the country, we adopted two older cats from a shelter - Sofie and Kiri. We let them out in the morning to hunt mice and voles and brought them in at night.
Kiri was a wonder cat. Sofie was quirky but also really fun in her own way.

When they eventually passed away, we adopted two more indoor/outdoor cats - Cassie and Tinker.

We heard about a couple who said they were moving and couldn't take their cat.
She was a pure-bred Burmese that they had paid a lot of money for. She was chocolate brown with a cream-colored undercoat. Even though she was 6 years old, she was very small but built like a panther.
We named her Coco.

When Coco passed away, my wife heard about someone who was fostering an orange, part Maine coon.
We got him when he was maybe 5 months old.
We were with some friends and discussing what to name him. Because he was marmalade orange and it was during Trump's first administration, someone jokingly suggested POTUS. We thought that was really funny. Now we named him POTUS and call him Poatie.
Our first boy kitty, he grew up to be 18 lb and is and super fluffy. He's a very handsome, gentle boy.

Rosie passed away on Dec 10, 2019 while we still had Coco and Poatie was still young.

After Coco passed, all we had was Poatie.

Sofie, Kiri, Cassie, Tinker, Rosie and Coco are buried with honor in a row in our back yard with stones to mark their graves.

At the end of June 2025, a mama cat and three small kittens started coming to our porch. The kittens were still nursing. They looked to be 5 or 6 weeks old.
We gave them food and water and they gradually allowed us to pet them.
They would disappear from time to time.
On July 4, the mama and two kittens disappeared but the one boy kitten stayed behind. Rather than leave it out at night, we brought him inside. He acclimated immediately.
He is gray with black spots and stripes. We named him Sterling.

About a month later, one of the other kittens was left alone on our porch. We. brought her in. She is cream-colored with a gray tail, feet, ears and markings on her face.
We named her Pearl.

Sterling and Pearl have totally acclimated to our house. They get along with Poatie and our bunny,, Pepper.
They are both about 6.5 lbs and have developed super fluffy tails. They turned out to be great cats.

We keep all three cats indoors to keep them safe. They are very happy.

I heard animal adoption centres in Toronto are offering discounts on pet adoptions right now because they have too many animals to get rid of and not enough space to house incoming pets. I really want a cute pet, but I don't live alone so my entire group would have agree to it.

Rescue centers have monitized cats so you do have to hand over cash money to pick one up. I got one last year.

I just didn't think of installing a cat flap. It would have easier and it would have been self selecting of a cat with a sense of entitlement - which is how I like them to be.

You've got a point Poppy. My wife and I never ever thought of "buying" a cat, because they merely chose our place to live their life... Don't ask me why, they just did live at our place, and I still have one rather old cat still alive here... his left side is nearly completely paralized but I consider him as my last good friend.

Yes, I do buy registered purebred breeding stock Ragdolls as I raise registered, purebred Ragdoll kittens. I sell the kittens at 12 weeks for $3000.00 each and have people constantly looking for kittens to purchase.

My sister bought a cat named Sebastian that didn’t work out too well down the road Sebastian was taken out and shot because he was a bad cat. But my neighbor had a cat and it’s still alive. It was a great cat, but they moved last week

I have done that because I wanted a Scottish Fold cat, and you cannot get those as strays. They are highly valued and very rare. My cat Allister, who you see in my profile photo, is a Scottish Fold. I love him dearly.

Hell no, I would never support breeders. The animal shelters are full of amazing cats.

Both of mine were strays. I don’t think any I had as a child were bought either? It’s not like the world is running out of them so I don’t see why anyone would
