Considering all the comments, this result may be controversial.

All of the sources I used when compiling this question say...

I don't see how. City limits don't have to include just urban area. You said "largest city by land area" you didn't say "urban area". "Land area" is the entire city limits/boundary. So I don't know what you're debating. The Juneau and Jacksonville thing I've known for years.

My hometown is the largest city, by area, in the Continental US, so obviously NYC is not yet largest in the world.

@AviatorTom. Hey Tom. Google says that Nagqu in Tibet, China is the largest city with a with a land area of 174,000 square miles. NYC is approx 470 square miles. Now Google also pointed out the definition of a city changes from country to country.
