If You Have A Dog, Or Had A Dog, Was Your Dog Well Trained?

I regularly see people being dragged along by their dog, and I've seen the dog refusing to walk with the dog owner, and the owner waiting until the dog decides to move on.

Yesterday it was different, the poor dog was dragged along, and negotiated obstacles by virtually being lifted up on it's lead.

The owner was nonchalant about her actions, with the mature dog happily accepting not being allowed to walk by the owners side, and struggling to keep up with it's little legs.

What kind of relationship do you have with your dog, or would you have with your dog if you had one?

A. My dog is or was well trained, and stays or stayed by my side with or without a lead, and obeys or obeyed my commands immediately.

B. The dog walks or walked me.

C. I walk or walked the dog.

D. Something else.

I know someone that had a German Shepherd, it was an ex Police Department dog that had been rejected for not being suitably aggressive.

The dog was amazing it followed every command instantly, and a lead was unnecessary, though one was always available.

Even though it was highly trained it still was allowed it's freedom like any other dog.

It has been trained to search for drugs etc. and was fun to ask it to search for items that we had hidden, and obviously found them with little difficulty

I think there’s a difference between a dog being “well trained” and being perfectly obedient. A dog can still have its own personality, get excited, sniff everything, or occasionally pull on the leash and still be a good, well-behaved dog.

For me, the important things would be that the dog listens when it really matters, behaves reasonably around people and other animals, and can be controlled safely outside. I’d rather have a happy, well-adjusted dog that understands basic boundaries than one that knows a dozen tricks but is constantly stressed.

And honestly, some dogs definitely have a way of making you think they’re the ones training you! 😄

I have dog now... and I had a dog too, during my childhood/teens

they were both, very well adjusted... and I said adjusted because I didn't train the per se, not to be like working dogs or something, no tricks either

I see dogs as friends and it's very important to me that they have their own personalities and for them to be as they really are but then yes, well adjusted because you just can't let their instinct be their lead, lmao

they would still listen to me when necessary, there was that commanding voice that they were used to, when needed

Our family's dog is well behaved, for the most part. I say that because he is a hunting dog. He has certain instincts that will kick in. They aren't things that you can really train out of that particular breed.

On the other hand, he is smart and will follow commands. You just have to be careful with him outside. He is not the type of dog you can have off leash.

Ours is well behaved. She is an old lady now, so she doesn't do much that she could get in trouble with.

I even trained an aggressively begging dog (all-female household) inside of a minute. All I needed was a rolled-up newspaper.
